Match the soil quantity to the finished landscaping

Use the specified installed area and depth, then check the supplier’s volume, density and bag size. A volume estimate and a delivery weight are related through the selected soil density, not through a universal bulk-bag capacity.

Topsoil calculator for lawns, raised beds and borders

This free topsoil calculator estimates the material needed to add a measured soil layer. Enter one lawn, several raised beds or a mixture of planting areas with different depths. Choose bags labelled by volume or weight, or loose bulk orders. Optional existing stock, delivery loads and pricing turn the volume into a practical order and printable estimate.

Start with the added depth and measured area. You do not need to know soil density when buying by volume unless you also want an estimated weight or payload calculation. Supplier bag sizes, bulk density and ordering increments remain editable because they differ between products and delivery arrangements.

How to calculate your topsoil requirement

  1. Choose Metric or Imperial and enter the default depth of new soil to add.
  2. Measure the first area. Select rectangle, triangle, circle or direct measured area.
  3. Deduct paths, structures or other excluded area per copy. Use a quantity for repeated identical beds.
  4. Add more areas and override depth where the new layer differs.
  5. Choose the buying method and enter the actual bag size or bulk ordering step.
  6. Add a considered loose-volume allowance and existing usable stock if appropriate.
  7. Optionally enter density, delivery capacities and costs, then calculate and print the results.

Area times added depth

For a rectangular bed, multiply length by width to find area. Multiply that area by the soil depth in the same base length unit to find volume. A 5 m by 4 m area with a 100 mm added layer needs 20 × 0.1 = 2 m³ before any allowance. The calculator converts millimetres to metres internally, preventing the common mistake of multiplying square metres directly by the number 100.

Triangle mode uses the perpendicular rise, not a sloping edge. Circle mode takes the full diameter. Direct area is useful when you have already measured an irregular lawn or planting plan. Split irregular sites into non-overlapping sections, and make sure you do not enter both the complete area and the same sections again.

Different beds and uneven ground

A shallow lawn improvement and a deep raised bed should not be forced into one depth. Add separate area cards and use the optional depth override. Blank inherits the project depth; a positive override replaces it. Copies repeat the entire section, including its exclusion and depth.

For uneven ground, measure representative depth zones or use an independently calculated average depth where that is appropriate. This tool does not build a terrain model from spot levels. Enter only the soil you need to add: existing soil remaining in place is not another layer to purchase. The depth suitable for planting depends on the site, existing soil and intended use.

Loose-volume allowance and settling

The optional percentage increases the measured volume to allow for a deliberately chosen extra amount. It might represent expected settling from supplier advice, handling loss or a reserve. It is not an automatic prediction of how the soil will compact. If your depth already includes that adjustment, do not add it again as a percentage.

Topsoil is not interchangeable with engineered structural fill. Heavy compaction can also be unsuitable for the intended planting area. Choose the material and preparation method for your project, then use the calculator to quantify the specified added layer. Separate estimates are clearer when different beds need different soil products or blends.

Bags, bulk bags and loose orders

Use the actual labelled bag volume. Small bags and large bulk bags can contain very different amounts, and the name “tonne bag” does not guarantee a tonne of soil or a fixed cubic volume. A bag labelled in litres can be converted directly to volume without assuming density.

For example, 2 m³ is 2,000 litres. With 50-litre bags, that is 40 bags before allowances. Add 10% loose volume and the requirement becomes 2,200 litres, or 44 bags. If four matching whole bags are already available, buy 40. If the supplier only sells groups of ten, those 40 bags form four purchase packs. The 50-litre size is an arithmetic example; the calculator starts with the bag volume blank.

Loose bulk orders can be priced by cubic metre or cubic yard. Enter the supplier’s ordering increment and any minimum new order. Stock is deducted first; the remaining order respects the minimum and rounds up to an increment. No minimum order is imposed when existing stock already meets the entire requirement. Price is per cubic unit, not per delivery.

Converting soil volume to weight

Weight equals loose volume multiplied by the loose bulk density. Density varies with soil composition, moisture and condition. Rolawn’s calculation guidance explicitly notes that bulk density varies by topsoil type and recommends checking specifications. The calculator therefore does not silently apply one density to every product.

Enter density in kg/m³ when buying by weight, estimating weight or using a payload limit. That technical unit remains kg/m³ even in Imperial mode, so supplier data can be copied consistently. Metric bulk weight is tonnes of 1,000 kg. Imperial bulk weight is US short tons of 2,000 lb; these are different from UK long tons. Bag weights convert between kilograms and pounds.

Weight-labelled bags use the entered density to estimate the volume in each bag. That result is only as reliable as the density. If the supplier states a usable volume directly, the volume-bag method usually avoids an unnecessary conversion.

Delivery loads and handling trips

The optional load estimator uses the new rounded order, not the original placed volume. Enter usable volume per load, available material payload, or both. It rounds up each applicable count and uses the larger. For instance, 2 m³ of ordered soil at an assumed 1,500 kg/m³ weighs 3 tonnes. With capacity 1 m³ and 1 tonne per load, weight requires three loads even though volume alone would require two.

This is capacity arithmetic, not a vehicle-loading plan. It assumes the soil can be divided across loads and does not model the shape or weight of packaging, pallets, equipment or other cargo. Use an available material payload that already accounts for other loads, and confirm the actual arrangement. For barrow trips, enter a realistic usable volume rather than a brim-full nominal capacity.

Delivery pricing can include one fixed charge and a cost per estimated load. Both add when entered. Leave one at zero if it is already included in the other. If you are only estimating materials, all delivery costs can stay at zero.

Labour, extras, markup and tax

Labour can be charged by covered area, measured placed volume, hours or days. Area and placed-volume methods exclude the extra loose allowance and purchase surplus. Time pricing can better represent long barrow routes, restricted access or difficult preparation. Add separately assessed removal, edging, equipment or amendments under other costs.

The estimated cost combines new soil, delivery, labour and extras. Markup adds a percentage to that cost, and tax applies to the marked-up amount. This is markup rather than profit margin. Use consistent pretax input prices; changing currency changes the display symbol and does not apply an exchange rate.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags are in one cubic metre?

Divide 1,000 litres by the stated litres per bag and round up to whole purchases. Bag sizes vary, so check the supplier’s label.

Is one bulk bag always one tonne?

No. Bulk bags may be sold by volume or weight, and soil density varies. Enter the actual product quantity rather than relying on the informal bag name.

Do I need density for a volume order?

Only if you also want estimated weight or a payload-based load count. Volume-only orders work without density.

Can different beds have different depths?

Yes. Use the optional depth override on each area. Blank inherits the project depth, and copies repeat the complete section.

Does the extra percentage predict settling?

No. It applies your chosen extra loose-volume allowance. Use project or supplier information and avoid including the same adjustment twice.

Can I use this for a layered raised-bed mix?

Calculate each specified material layer separately. The tool does not recommend a soil/compost ratio or infer how blends change volume.
