How Much Concrete to Order: Volume, Bags and Allowances

Calculate concrete for a 12-by-10-foot example, compare cubic yards with bag yield, and separate allowances from supplier rounding.

To estimate concrete, calculate the space being filled, add a deliberate allowance, then match the result to the supplier’s ordering units. Square footage alone is not enough: thickness changes the quantity just as directly as length or width.

Measure concrete rather than the whole excavation

Start with the inside dimensions of the form or specified concrete section. Soil removal may extend beyond that space and include room for aggregate, drainage or other work. Do not use the entire excavation volume as the concrete order unless the checked design actually calls for it.

Break changes in thickness into separate quantities. If a thickened edge sits below a slab already counted, add only its extra depth; counting the full edge section again would duplicate the overlapping slab volume. Treat intersecting footings the same way.

For a simple arithmetic example, choose Imperial units and enter a 12-foot length, 10-foot width, 4-inch thickness and one identical area. Four inches is one-third of a foot, so the geometric volume is 12 × 10 × ⅓ = 40 cubic feet.

Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards: 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48148… cubic yards. With an illustrative 10% over-order allowance, the target becomes 44 cubic feet, or 1.62963… cubic yards. The live tool displays 1.630 cubic yards after rounding.

The example’s thickness is not a slab recommendation. Loading, soil, exposure, reinforcement, joints and construction requirements must be settled for the actual project before the quantity is useful.

Choose the allowance deliberately

An allowance can cover small dimensional variation and handling losses, but it should not conceal an unmeasured change in depth. Check the forms and prepared base before ordering. A depression across a substantial area can consume more concrete than a generic percentage anticipates.

NRMCA’s ordering guide discusses contingencies and advises avoiding excessive orders as well as small cleanup loads. Agree the appropriate allowance with the supplier or contractor using the actual placement conditions.

Keep the unadjusted volume and the adjusted target in the notes. When someone reviews the order later, they should be able to see whether the extra quantity came from measured geometry, an allowance or supplier rounding.

Translate the target into a supplier order

The calculator’s decimal output is not necessarily an available order increment. Ask how the supplier rounds quantities, whether a minimum or short-load charge applies, and what delivery and waiting time include.

For the example, 1.630 cubic yards is the calculated planning target. Do not assume the supplier will deliver that exact increment or that a nominal truck capacity determines the minimum purchase. Confirm the accepted order amount in writing.

Provide the project specification, placement location, access conditions and intended delivery timing. The mixture is a separate decision from volume. A cubic-yard number cannot select strength, air content, exposure suitability or the method of placement.

Compare bags using finished yield

Bag weight is not concrete volume. In bag mode, enter the product’s stated finished yield and select its units. The bag-weight field helps identify the product, but yield determines the number of bags.

For a concrete example, QUIKRETE’s Concrete Mix data sheet lists approximately 0.60 cubic feet from its 80-pound bag. Using that yield with the 44-cubic-foot target gives 44 ÷ 0.60 = 73.33… bags, rounded up to 74 whole bags. We checked that result in the live tool.

Recheck the exact product and current package information. The 0.60 figure is not universal for every bag labeled 80 pounds. Do not add more water to try to stretch a bag’s yield.

Compare the complete supply method

Seventy-four 80-pound bags represent 5,920 pounds of dry material to transport and handle. That is an arithmetic total, not a safe vehicle payload. Account for delivery, mixing capacity, labor and the placement sequence when comparing bags with ready-mix.

Finish the estimate without duplicating layers

Record concrete, aggregate base and excavation and disposal separately. Add formwork, reinforcement, labor and delivery where they are genuinely additional. A contractor’s package may already include several of those lines.

Save the checked geometry, allowance, yield or ready-mix order basis and supplier quote together. The useful output is a traceable order that can be reviewed before delivery, rather than a precise-looking number with no explanation behind it.
