How to Use This Tile Calculator
This tile calculator is designed for real-world wall and floor tiling jobs where you may have several surfaces, openings to deduct, waste to allow for, whole boxes to purchase, adhesive to estimate, grout to calculate and labour or customer pricing to work out.
You can use it for bathrooms, kitchens, floors, shower walls, splashbacks, utility rooms, feature walls and other tiled areas. It works with metric and imperial measurements and lets you build a complete estimate rather than simply dividing one room area by one tile size.
How Many Tiles Do I Need?
The basic calculation is straightforward: work out the net area that will actually be tiled, divide that area by the face area of one tile, then add an allowance for cutting, breakages and spare tiles.
1. Measure the tiled surfaces
Enter every floor, wall or separate section that needs tile. If you have two identical walls, use the quantity field instead of entering the same measurements twice.
2. Deduct untiled openings
Doors, windows and other areas that will not be tiled can be entered as deductions. The calculator subtracts these from the gross surface area to produce the net tiled area.
3. Enter the tile size
Enter the actual tile length and width. The calculator works out the face area of one tile and how many are needed to cover the net area.
4. Add your own waste allowance
Waste is not automatically added because each installation is different. You choose the percentage based on the layout, cutting requirements and how much spare material you want.
Tile Calculator Worked Example
Imagine a bathroom project with a floor measuring 3.2 m × 2.4 m and two shower walls measuring 1.8 m × 2.4 m each. There is also a door measuring 0.8 m × 2.0 m and a window measuring 1.0 m × 0.8 m that will not be tiled.
Gross floor area: 3.2 × 2.4 = 7.68 m²
Two shower walls: 1.8 × 2.4 × 2 = 8.64 m²
Total gross area: 16.32 m²
Door deduction: 0.8 × 2.0 = 1.60 m²
Window deduction: 1.0 × 0.8 = 0.80 m²
Net tiled area: 16.32 − 2.40 = 13.92 m²
Using a 600 mm × 300 mm tile gives a tile face area of 0.18 m². The raw requirement is approximately 77.33 tiles. With a 10% waste allowance, the calculator rounds the final requirement up to 86 tiles.
If those tiles are sold in boxes of 12, you would need 8 boxes. That means buying 96 tiles, leaving an estimated surplus of 10 tiles after allowing for the entered waste.
How Much Tile Waste Should I Allow?
There is no single waste percentage that is correct for every tiling job. Straightforward rooms with a regular grid layout may need less spare material than a room with many corners, niches, columns, awkward cuts or a diagonal layout.
This calculator deliberately does not force an automatic waste percentage. You can enter the allowance that suits the actual job.

Tile Box Calculator: How Many Boxes Do I Need?
Tiles are often sold by the box or pack rather than individually. Once the calculator has worked out the final number of tiles required, it divides that quantity by the number of tiles in each box and rounds the result up to the next whole box.
For example, if you need 86 tiles and each box contains 12:
86 ÷ 12 = 7.17 boxes
You must therefore purchase 8 whole boxes.
8 × 12 = 96 tiles purchased.
96 − 86 = 10 estimated surplus tiles.
You can also enter a cost per box to estimate the tile material cost automatically. If your supplier sells tiles individually, switch to the individual tile pricing option instead.
Tile Adhesive Calculator
Adhesive usage cannot be estimated accurately from tile area alone because coverage varies by product, surface, trowel notch, bed thickness, tile size, surface flatness and installation technique.
For that reason, this calculator uses the coverage figure supplied by the adhesive manufacturer. Enter the number of square metres or square feet that one bag or tub is expected to cover and the calculator will work out the whole number of bags or tubs required.
You can also add a separate adhesive waste percentage. This is useful because the area covered by adhesive can be increased slightly to allow for normal site losses and application variation.
Net tiled area: 13.92 m²
Adhesive waste allowance: 10%
Adjusted adhesive area: 15.312 m²
Manufacturer coverage: 5 m² per bag
15.312 ÷ 5 = 3.06, so the practical order quantity is 4 bags.
Grout Calculator and Grout Volume Estimate
Grout is more complicated than simply applying one fixed coverage figure to the tiled area. The amount required depends on the tile length, tile width, grout joint width and the approximate depth of the grout-filled joint.
This calculator estimates the proportion of the tiled surface occupied by grout joints and converts that joint area into an approximate grout volume. The result is shown in litres.
Because grout products have different densities and yields, the calculator then lets you use manufacturer information in either of two ways:
- Manufacturer yield: enter how many litres of mixed grout one bag or tub produces.
- Manufacturer coverage: enter the stated area coverage for the relevant product and joint configuration.
Floor Tile Calculator, Wall Tile Calculator and Bathroom Tile Calculator
The same area method can be used for floors, walls and mixed projects. For a floor, enter the floor length and width. For a wall, enter the wall width and height. For bathrooms and kitchens, add each separate wall, floor or splashback as its own surface.
This is especially useful for bathrooms where the job may include a floor, shower walls, a bath surround and a separate feature wall. You can then deduct doors, windows or other areas that do not receive tile.

Metric and Imperial Tile Measurements
The calculator supports both metric and imperial project measurements. In metric mode, room and wall dimensions are entered in metres while tile and grout-joint dimensions are entered in millimetres. In imperial mode, room and wall dimensions are entered in feet while tile and grout-joint dimensions are entered in inches.
For example, 8.5 feet represents 8 feet 6 inches when entered as a decimal measurement. If you are measuring on site with a tape, convert mixed feet-and-inch measurements into decimal feet before entering them.
Estimating Labour, Markup and VAT / Sales Tax
For contractors, tilers and handymen, the material quantity is only part of the job estimate. This calculator can also include labour using an hourly rate, day rate or simple labour total.
After materials, additional project costs and labour are added together, the calculator produces the total job cost. You can then add a percentage markup to produce the pre-tax customer price. Finally, you can enter your own VAT or sales-tax rate.

Common Tile Estimating Mistakes
- Measuring only the floor and forgetting tiled walls, splashbacks or bath surrounds.

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Calculate the net tiled area, divide it by the face area of one tile and then add your chosen waste allowance. Always round physical tile quantities up to whole tiles.
How many tiles do I need per square metre?
Divide one square metre by the face area of one tile in square metres. For example, a 600 × 300 mm tile has an area of 0.18 m², so 1 ÷ 0.18 gives approximately 5.56 tiles per m² before waste.
How many tiles do I need per square foot?
In imperial mode, the calculator converts the entered tile size into an area and shows the approximate number of tiles needed per square foot.
What percentage should I add for tile waste?
There is no universal percentage. Waste depends on layout, room shape, cutting, tile size, breakages and how many spare tiles you want. Enter the allowance that suits the actual job rather than relying on an automatic figure.
Does a diagonal tile layout need more waste?
It can. Diagonal and more complex layouts often involve additional cutting and off-cuts. The calculator identifies the chosen layout but does not automatically change your waste percentage.
How does the tile box calculator work?
The final tile requirement is divided by the number of tiles per box and rounded up to a whole box. The calculator then shows total tiles purchased and the estimated surplus.
Should I deduct doors and windows from wall tile calculations?
Large untiled openings can be deducted for a more realistic net area. For very small openings, some users choose not to deduct them because cutting and waste may offset part of the saving.
How much tile adhesive do I need?
Enter the net tiled area and the coverage per bag or tub stated by the adhesive manufacturer. The calculator rounds the result up to the next whole bag or tub.
How much grout do I need?
Grout usage depends on tile length, tile width, joint width and joint depth. This calculator estimates grout joint volume and can then use manufacturer yield or coverage information to estimate the number of bags or tubs to purchase.
Can I calculate walls and floors together?
Yes. Add each wall, floor, splashback or tiled section as a separate surface. The calculator combines them into one gross tiling area before deductions.
Can I use custom tile sizes?
Yes. The preset sizes are only shortcuts. You can type any tile length and width needed for the project.
Can I use feet and inches?
Yes. In imperial mode, enter surface dimensions in feet and tile, grout-joint and joint-depth dimensions in inches. Mixed feet-and-inch surface measurements should be converted to decimal feet before entry.
Can the calculator include labour?
Yes. Labour can be calculated by hourly rate, day rate or by entering one simple labour total.
Does the calculator include VAT or sales tax?
Yes. Enter the applicable VAT or sales-tax percentage yourself. No local tax rate is assumed automatically.
Can I print or save the tile estimate as a PDF?
Yes. After calculating the project, use the Print / Save Results as PDF button in the results section. Your browser print dialog can normally be used either to print the estimate or save it as a PDF.
A Final Check Before Ordering
A calculator can help reduce measuring and arithmetic mistakes, but it cannot see the actual room or judge the suitability of a particular installation system. Before buying materials, recheck the measurements, tile size, box quantity, planned layout and product coverage information.
