Artificial grass calculator for rolls, materials and job cost
This free artificial grass calculator turns lawn measurements into a practical roll-cut estimate. It separates the area you will install from the area you need to purchase, then shows cut quantities, seams and purchase surplus. Optional joining tape, adhesive, membrane, base material, infill and job pricing help build a more complete estimate without making every field compulsory.
Start with one bounding rectangle and your supplier’s roll settings. You can add more sections, repeat identical ones or paste several measurements in bulk. The results include a comparison with cuts running the other way, but your selected direction stays in control.
How to use the calculator
- Select Metric or Imperial and enter a section’s bounding length and width.
- Deduct measured exclusions only where they should reduce net installation materials and area labour.
- Choose whether cut lengths run along the entered length or width.
- Check purchased roll width, cut-length increment and any trimming allowance.

Why lawn area is different from purchased grass area
A 6 m by 5 m lawn covers 30 m². If the available roll is 4 m wide and cuts run along the 6 m dimension, the plan needs two 6 m cuts. You purchase 48 m² even though the lawn uses only 30 m². The difference comes from roll geometry, not an arbitrary percentage added to the area.
With the same example turned through the other direction, two 5 m cuts purchase 40 m². That is a useful comparison, but it is not automatically the correct layout. Pile direction, viewing position, connecting sections, product availability and access can decide which orientation is practical.
The calculator therefore keeps the chosen direction and displays the alternative separately. It does not mix roll widths or fit offcuts from one section into another. A supplier may be able to improve the plan after reviewing an accurate drawing, but this estimate does not assume that every offcut can be reused.
Measuring irregular lawns and exclusions
For an irregular lawn, measure the rectangle that fully encloses the section you plan to cover. Enter a measured excluded area for a bed or opening if that should reduce net infill, base, membrane and area-based labour. The exclusion does not remove a strip from the grass order.
This is deliberate: a hole in the middle of a lawn usually still sits inside the purchased cuts. Its location matters to any reuse plan, and a single area deduction cannot describe that location. Side seam length also remains based on the bounding rectangle, so a seam crossing an opening is not automatically shortened.
Separate sections should not overlap. Copies repeat the whole section, including its exclusion and chosen direction. For connected sections, check their physical orientation on a sketch; two rows both labelled “along length” do not prove that their pile points in the same compass direction.
Roll width, usable coverage and trimming
The purchased roll width determines what you pay for. Usable coverage width describes how much width one prepared strip actually covers. Leave usable width blank when full purchased width is appropriate, or enter a smaller value where edge preparation reduces coverage. It cannot be larger than the width being purchased.
The outer-edge allowance adds to both ends of each overall dimension. For example, entering 0.05 m adds 0.10 m to the total length and 0.10 m to the total width before planning strips. This is not a percentage and is not a recommendation for every product. Its default is zero, which you should review against the required trimming allowance.
Cut lengths round upward to the supplier’s increment. A required 6.04 m length with 0.1 m increments becomes 6.1 m. A small dimensional change can also trigger an extra strip when the across dimension crosses a usable-width boundary. Check actual dimensions rather than relying on a rounded result label.
The optional maximum cut length provides another check. A chosen cut beyond that limit stops the estimate and asks for a revised plan. The calculator does not silently split a long cut and invent end joins. The alternative-direction table marks whether that option fits an entered maximum; it does not confirm stock availability.
Seams, joining tape and adhesive
Side seams use the number of gaps between adjacent strips multiplied by the installed length along those strips. Two strips running 6 m create one 6 m seam. Three strips running 6 m create two seams, totalling 12 m. Identical copies repeat those seams.
Additional measured seam length can cover connections between separate sections or end joins from a separately checked layout. Add it once for the entire job. It does not change the grass cuts or automatically validate an end-join arrangement.
When joining purchases are enabled, their allowance applies to total seam length. Tape stock reduces new tape purchases, which round to complete rolls. Adhesive uses its own seam coverage per container and stock of usable whole containers. Existing tape does not make the adhesive requirement disappear.
Use coverage for the specified joining system and seam width. A container’s general square-metre coverage is not interchangeable with metres of finished seam. The quantity estimate does not establish compatible tape, adhesive or application conditions.
Optional membrane, base and infill
Membrane or underlay is an area-based estimate: net installed area plus your overlap and cutting allowance, less usable stock, rounded to complete packs. It does not plan membrane roll cuts. Review actual overlaps and how pieces can be laid before purchasing. If your system needs several different layers, estimate them separately or add checked additional costs.
Base volume uses net area multiplied by your specified installed depth. For 30 m² at 50 mm, the geometric volume is 1.5 m³. A separately entered ordering uplift changes that purchase volume. Neither the example depth nor any compaction allowance is a universal installation specification.
The calculator does not infer density or convert that base volume into tonnes. Ask the supplier to relate your required finished volume to the delivered material. Ground conditions, drainage, existing construction and the product system determine the preparation work.
Infill uses net lawn area multiplied by the specified kg/m² rate. Matching stock reduces new purchases, and the result rounds up to whole bags. Purchased grass surplus is excluded from infill usage because it is not part of the installed lawn. The rate and bag fields remain explicitly metric in both measurement systems.
Transparent job pricing
Grass cost uses the full purchased area, including cut surplus. Installation materials use the enabled purchase quantities, while area labour uses net installed area. Choose hourly or daily labour when preparation, access or awkward detailing makes an area rate unsuitable.
Delivery and other costs can include measured edging, fixing supplies, lifting existing surfaces, disposal, machinery or additional materials. Check that those items are not already included in another rate. Optional prices can stay zero for a quantity-only estimate, and disabling a material excludes its saved figures.
Markup adds a percentage to total cost. Tax then applies to the marked-up amount. For £500 of cost and 20% markup, the pretax selling price is £600; 20% tax makes £720. Markup is not the same as profit margin. Currency selection changes the displayed symbol without applying an exchange rate.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator reuse offcuts?
No. Every section and copy gets its own full-width cuts. Offcut reuse depends on dimensions, position and pile direction, so it needs a checked layout rather than an area-only credit.
Why does an exclusion not reduce the grass order?
The exclusion reduces net installed materials and area labour. Its position inside the bounding cuts is unknown, so the grass cut list and side seams stay conservative.
Should I choose whichever direction buys less grass?
Only after confirming pile alignment, connections and supplier constraints. The comparison shows the quantity difference but does not rotate your selected plan.
What happens when a cut is too long?
If you enter a supplier maximum and the chosen cut exceeds it, the estimate stops. Revise the layout with the supplier; automatic end joins are not assumed.
Are base material and infill compulsory?
No. They are optional quantity estimates for a separately specified installation system. Leave them off when they are outside your scope.
Can I paste several lawn sections?
Yes. Bulk entry accepts six comma-separated or tab-separated columns: name, length, width, excluded area per copy, copies and cut direction. Use length or width for direction and the displayed measurement system.
Can I print the result for free?
Yes. Calculate first, then choose Print / Save PDF. The printable estimate contains the cut list, assumptions, optional materials and pricing without the article or paid product promotion.
