Turf calculator for lawn rolls, preparation materials and cost

This free turf calculator helps turn measured lawn areas into whole rolls to buy. Use one rectangle or combine front and rear lawns, curved sections and repeated patches. Enter the supplier’s actual roll coverage, choose how whole rolls should round, and add only the optional details needed for your job.

The calculator covers natural grass turf, sometimes called sod. It estimates area and purchases; it does not design the strip layout or choose a grass variety. Optional topsoil and fertiliser quantities help with a specified preparation plan, while labour, delivery and other costs build a printable project estimate.

How to use the turf calculator

1. Choose Metric or Imperial and give the estimate an optional project name.
2. Enter the lawn dimensions or a directly measured area. Add exclusions and repeated copies if needed.
3. Enter usable coverage per roll, or its usable length and width.
4. Add a considered cutting allowance and choose pooled or separate whole-roll rounding.
5. Optionally deduct usable fresh stock, enter pack sizes and add the supplier’s price.
6. Enable topsoil or fertiliser only when they are part of your preparation plan.
7. Add optional job costs, calculate, review the breakdown and print the result.

Measure the lawn you will actually cover

For a rectangle, multiply length by width. Triangle mode needs the perpendicular rise rather than a sloping side. Circle mode uses diameter, not radius. Direct area lets you enter a value measured elsewhere. Divide irregular lawns into non-overlapping shapes and add them separately; do not also enter the complete lawn again.

Excluded area applies to each copy. A 5 m by 4 m lawn with a 2 m² planting bed has 18 m² to turf. Two identical copies cover 36 m². If the planting beds differ, use separate cards instead of one repeated area. Measure along the surface where slopes make the laid area materially larger than its flat plan.

Actual coverage per roll

Roll size is a supplier input. For example, Rolawn describes its Medallion rolls as approximately 1 m² when harvested, while other products or supply formats differ. The calculator leaves coverage blank so a product example does not become a universal assumption.

If the supplier gives dimensions, usable length multiplied by usable width provides the area per roll. This mode still calculates area coverage; it does not lay strips across a drawn garden, optimise offcuts or account automatically for trimming damaged edges. Use a realistic allowance and review the actual laying arrangement before ordering.

Pooled and separate roll rounding

Pooled mode adds all adjusted lawn areas before rounding to whole rolls. It is useful when material can be shared across the job. Separate mode rounds each lawn copy independently. That can provide a more cautious quantity for disconnected lawns or work completed in separate batches.

For example, two separate 2.2 m² patches need 4.4 m² before allowance. At 1 m² per roll, pooled mode gives five rolls. Separate mode gives three for each patch, six altogether. Neither result proves a workable cutting plan. Narrow strips, curves and unusable remnants can still change the order.

The allowance increases area before roll rounding. It is not automatically a fixed industry percentage. Choose it to suit your measurements, cuts and experience. Existing usable rolls are deducted after the required whole count, and the new purchase then rounds to a complete pack or pallet.

A worked lawn-order example

A 5 m by 4 m lawn covers 20 m². With 1 m² rolls and no allowance, it needs 20 rolls. Enter 10% for cuts and the adjusted area becomes 22 m². If two usable matching rolls are available, buy 20. A supplier pack of five makes that four packs.

At £4 per individual roll, new turf costs £80. Price-by-area mode instead multiplies the new purchased coverage by the entered square-unit price. It does not price only the measured lawn when the supplier charges for rounded rolls. Prices should be entered before the optional tax calculation to avoid counting tax twice.

Optional added topsoil

New topsoil is not automatically necessary for every lawn. Enable it when your checked preparation plan calls for an added layer. Enter only that new depth, not the full depth of soil already present. A 20 m² lawn with a 50 mm added layer has a measured requirement of 1 m³.

Each lawn can override the project soil depth. Blank inherits; zero excludes that area from new soil. Topsoil uses net lawn area without turf cutting allowance. It has a separate loose-volume percentage, stock deduction, minimum order and ordering step. A minimum does not force a purchase if usable stock already covers the need.

Soil suitability, drainage, preparation and finished levels need separate consideration. A loose-volume allowance is an entered assumption, not a prediction of how the soil will settle.

Optional fertiliser quantities

Use the rate on a suitable product label for the intended application. The calculator does not prescribe a dose or decide whether fertiliser is needed. The rate remains in grams per square metre, and bag and stock weights remain kilograms, clearly labelled in both measurement systems.

At an illustrative rate of 35 g/m², a 20 m² lawn requires 700 g, or 0.7 kg. With 0.2 kg of suitable stock, the remaining need is 0.5 kg. A 1 kg bag provides enough, leaving purchase surplus. Apply the stated dose rather than spreading all surplus merely because it was bought. Fertiliser quantities use the lawn area, without spare turf.

Labour, preparation and delivery costs

Choose area-based labour for a consistent priced scope, or hours/days when access, removal or grading dominate the work. Area-based labour uses net lawn area. Include equipment, disposal and other separately assessed work under other costs only where it is not already included elsewhere.

The cost subtotal combines new turf, enabled preparation materials, labour, delivery and extras. Markup adds a percentage of that cost. Tax applies to the marked-up amount. Markup is not profit margin, and currency selection changes the display without an exchange-rate conversion.

Delivery timing and laying preparation

Natural turf is a living product. Arrange delivery around prepared ground and the supplier’s handling instructions. Do not treat existing stock like indefinitely storable building material. Roll freshness, weather, access and the ability to water and care for the lawn affect the practical plan.

The calculator cannot confirm a suitable soil profile or guarantee establishment. Use current supplier guidance for preparation, laying and aftercare. Check finished levels around paths and buildings and keep the material estimate separate from drainage or landscape design decisions.
