Use this free wallpaper calculator to estimate how many wallpaper rolls you need for one wall, a feature wall or a full room. Unlike a basic area-only estimate, it works from the number of full vertical drops that can be cut from the roll and can account for trimming allowance, straight pattern repeats and half-drop pattern matching.
How to Use the Wallpaper Calculator
Measure the width and height of every wall you plan to paper and enter each wall separately. Then check the wallpaper label for the roll length, roll width, pattern match and vertical pattern repeat. These product details matter because two wallpapers covering a similar nominal area can produce a different number of usable full-height drops.
Useful tip: do not assume every roll is the same size. The calculator starts with a common 10.05 m × 53 cm roll as a convenient editable default, but you should replace those figures with the dimensions printed by the wallpaper manufacturer.
Why Wallpaper Is Better Calculated by Drops
Wallpaper is installed as vertical strips. If a wall is 2.4 m high, a leftover piece that is only 1.5 m long may add to the roll's total square area but cannot become another full-height strip. That is why simply dividing wall area by roll area can understate the number of rolls required.
This calculator first divides each wall width by the roll width and rounds up to a whole number of drops. It then adds your trimming allowance to the wall height. For patterned wallpaper, it also accounts for the additional material that can be lost while bringing each new strip back to the correct pattern position.
Pattern Repeat, Straight Match and Half-Drop Match
A wallpaper's pattern repeat is the vertical distance between identical points in the design. A random or free-match wallpaper normally creates the least matching waste. A straight-match design needs adjacent strips to align at the same vertical pattern position. A half-drop or offset pattern alternates the starting position of neighbouring strips, which can increase material use.
Always use the repeat and match information from the product label or manufacturer. Large repeats can significantly reduce the usable coverage of each roll, so they should not be ignored when ordering.
Should You Deduct Doors and Windows?
This calculator deliberately does not deduct normal doors and windows from the wallpaper roll count. A decorator still commonly needs a full drop crossing the opening before trimming the paper around it, so subtracting every opening by area can create an unrealistically low order quantity. Very large openings, unusual wall shapes and complex installations may need a separate site-specific assessment.
Wallpaper Cost, Adhesive, Labour and Customer Price
If you are pricing a decorating job, open the optional pricing section and enter the cost per roll, adhesive coverage, adhesive cost, sundries, labour and other job costs. The calculator can then add your chosen markup and VAT or sales tax. Markup is calculated as a percentage added to the job cost; it is not treated as profit margin.

What does pattern repeat mean on wallpaper?
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design repeats itself. Matching patterned strips can require extra wallpaper to be trimmed away before the next strip starts at the correct point.
What is the difference between straight match and half-drop wallpaper?
With straight match, the same design point lines up horizontally across adjacent strips. With half-drop or offset match, neighbouring strips are vertically offset, commonly by half of the repeat, so the pattern forms a staggered alignment.
Should I buy an extra roll of wallpaper?
An extra roll can be useful for contingency, future repairs or installations with awkward shapes, but the right allowance depends on the project and product. Use the Extra Spare Rolls field if you deliberately want to add one or more full rolls beyond the calculated requirement.
Does the calculator include wallpaper adhesive?
Yes, optionally. Enter the adhesive manufacturer's stated coverage per pack and the calculator will divide the measured wall area by that coverage and round up to whole packs.
Can I use this wallpaper calculator in feet and inches?
You can switch the calculator to Imperial measurements. Wall dimensions and roll length are entered in feet, while roll width, pattern repeat and trimming allowance are entered in inches.
Can decorators use it to price a wallpapering job?
Yes. Optional fields cover wallpaper, adhesive, sundries, hourly/day-rate/fixed labour, other job costs, markup and VAT or sales tax. Leave those fields at zero if you only need a material quantity.
