Openings are deducted per copy. Quantity repeats the surface and its deductions. Each surface uses the project plaster settings unless you open its optional overrides.

Finish plaster — project defaults

Editable reference: 25 kg Thistle MultiFinish, 10 m² at 2 mm total thickness. Two passes forming a 2 mm skim still mean 2 mm total. A per-surface thickness override does not change the product’s reference coverage.

Leave off for skimming only. Surface overrides can include or exclude backing individually.

Use the specified product coverage and application thickness. Thickness fields estimate quantity; they do not confirm suitability or recommend a plaster system.

4. Job pricing Entire section optional

Only need bags? Leave these sections closed and prices at zero. Opening a section adds no cost; closing it does not clear values you entered.

Labour — optional

Area labour uses net area, without material waste. Choose one method to avoid double-counting. Separate rates use each row’s Wall/Ceiling type.

Plastering calculator: bags, coverage & skimming costs

This free plastering calculator helps plasterers, contractors, property-maintenance businesses and DIY users estimate finish plaster for walls and ceilings. It also supports a separate backing plaster allowance with inclusion and thickness controlled per surface. Measure your job, enter your product's coverage and see the working behind the result.

Use it for one wall, a whole room or a list of rooms. Individual surfaces and bulk entry use the same calculation. Quantity fields make repeated walls quick to enter, while the surface breakdown shows where the total comes from.

How to use the plastering and skimming calculator

  1. Choose Metric or Imperial and enter a project name if you want it on the printout.
  2. Add each wall or ceiling. Enter length and height for a wall, or length and width for a ceiling. Deduct the combined area of openings per copy and set the number of identical surfaces.
  3. For a longer list, use Bulk entry. Paste five comma-separated or tab-separated columns: name, length, height/width, quantity and opening area. Use decimal feet in Imperial mode, not feet-and-inches notation.
  4. Check the coverage per bag, reference thickness and total applied thickness for your finish plaster. Add a waste allowance suited to the job.
  5. Enable backing plaster only when needed. Enter its own coverage and thickness. Use each surface’s optional overrides when only some surfaces need backing or require a different thickness.
  6. Add current bag prices and optional labour, extras, markup and tax. Calculate, review the breakdown and use Print / Save PDF.

Room entry, direct areas and optional controls

The room shortcut calculates four walls from 2 × (length + width) × height and can also add a ceiling. Openings apply once to each room’s combined wall area. It creates editable surface rows; do not add the same room manually again. Direct area accepts an already measured area, with any opening deduction still applied per copy.

Every row identifies a wall or ceiling. Its optional settings can override the project finish thickness and backing inclusion/thickness. Blank thickness overrides inherit the project value. Bags are pooled by product across surfaces and rounded up once. If products differ, create separate estimates. Separate wall and ceiling labour rates use their respective net areas without waste.

Basic five-column bulk rows remain supported. Extended eleven-column rows preserve type, direct area and surface overrides; the format is shown above the bulk box. Switching between cards and bulk keeps these settings. Labour, accessories, markup and tax start neutral. Closing an optional section retains entered values, so set unwanted costs back to zero or choose No labour.

How many bags of plaster do I need?

The calculator first measures net area: (length × height or width − opening area) × quantity for each surface. It then adds your material waste allowance. For each product, estimated bags equal adjusted area divided by bag coverage, multiplied by total applied thickness divided by the product's reference thickness. Finish and backing plaster are rounded up separately to whole bags.

For example, two identical walls measuring 5 m × 2.4 m provide 24 m² with no openings. At 10 m² per bag and the reference thickness, 0% waste gives 2.4 bags, so buy 3. At 10% waste, the allowance becomes 26.4 m² and still requires 3 bags. This example does not include backing plaster or costs.

Product coverage and coat thickness

The editable finish reference uses a 25 kg Thistle MultiFinish bag covering 10 m² at 2 mm. The optional backing reference uses a 25 kg Thistle HardWall bag covering 3 m² at 11 mm for a wall estimate. These values are product references, not universal coverage figures. Consult the current MultiFinish product data sheet and HardWall product data sheet before selecting a system.

Enter the combined finished thickness, rather than multiplying by the number of trowel passes. Coverage scaling gives a quantity estimate; it does not establish an acceptable thickness or installation method. Different backgrounds, ceilings and plaster products can require different preparation, support and coat build-ups. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the actual application.

Measuring openings, reveals and awkward surfaces

Deduct windows and doors that will not be plastered. For repeated surfaces, the opening deduction applies to each copy. A quantity of two with 2 m² of openings deducts 4 m² overall. Reveal returns can add plaster area back into the job, so measure them as separate narrow surfaces. Divide irregular walls into simple rectangles without overlapping them, or choose Direct area and enter your measured area.

Small openings do not necessarily save the same amount of labour as their area suggests. If your labour price includes extra time for corners, access, preparation or repairs, use hourly/daily pricing or add the extra cost explicitly. The area-based labour option uses net area without material waste.

Building a plastering job price

Plaster cost uses the number of whole bags to purchase, not the fractional quantity consumed. Add your labour method and include costs for primers, beads, scrim, mesh, protection, access and travel where needed. The calculator does not estimate those accessory quantities automatically.

Markup is a percentage added to the combined material, labour and additional cost. A cost of 200 with 20% markup becomes 240 before tax. If you then enter 20% tax, the customer estimate is 288. These are illustrative values in any selected currency, not suggested prices or tax rates. Currency selection changes symbols only.

Frequently asked questions

Does two-coat skimming mean twice as many bags?

Not automatically. Enter total finished thickness. If two passes together make the thickness stated in the coverage data, use that total once. A separate backing plaster layer is a different product and is calculated separately.

Can I calculate several rooms at once?

Yes. Add multiple surfaces or paste a bulk list. Use descriptive names, such as Bedroom north wall or Kitchen ceiling. Identical surfaces can share a row with a quantity. Use a separate estimate for different products; thickness can be changed per surface.

What waste allowance should I use?

There is no single allowance that suits every job. Consider mixing losses, dropped material, uneven backgrounds and your working method. Waste starts at zero so it is a deliberate decision. Whole-bag rounding can provide an additional surplus, which is shown in the result.

Can this calculate ready-mixed joint compound?

You can enter a manufacturer's coverage for a pack or tub and use it as the purchasing unit, but the interface labels purchases as bags. The reference products are gypsum plasters; do not assume their coverage or application method applies to joint compound.

Does the calculator check whether plaster is suitable for a ceiling?

No. It estimates quantities from your inputs. Confirm the product, substrate, support, loading and permitted thickness independently using the manufacturer's guidance. The default backing thickness is a wall reference.

Does labour include material waste?

No. Area-based labour uses net measured area. Material waste affects plaster quantities only. Hourly and daily modes use the time you enter. Account for extra preparation and difficult detailing in your labour or additional costs.

Why did the number of bags increase after a small change?

Plaster is purchased in whole bags. A quantity just above a whole number needs the next bag. The calculator pools each product across the listed surfaces and rounds the total once.

Can I print or save the estimate?

Yes. Calculate first, then choose Print / Save PDF. A print preview opens containing the project, quantities, costs and assumptions. Choose its Print / Save PDF button, then Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog when available. If inputs change, recalculate before printing.

Choose the plaster product before rounding bags

Keep backing and finish plaster separate, with each product’s stated coverage and specified application thickness. Record walls, ceilings and openings consistently so the finish area follows the surfaces that will actually be covered.
