Sheet material cutting planner for plywood, MDF and OSB
This free sheet material cutting planner helps turn a rectangular parts list into a practical starting layout. Enter sheet dimensions, the measured saw kerf and your required cut sizes. The result shows suggested sheet layouts, labelled parts, remaining rectangular offcuts and optional purchase and job costs.
It is useful for shelving, cabinet panels, workshop storage and other jobs made from matching sheet stock. It solves a different problem from dividing total part area by sheet area: a part must physically fit, and the arrangement must leave room for the cut itself.
How to use the planner
- Choose millimetres or decimal inches and check the stock dimensions.
- Enter the actual saw kerf rather than assuming the blade’s body thickness.
- Add part length, width and quantity. Choose whether each type may rotate.
- Optionally reserve unusable borders and include matching full sheets already owned.
- Enable owned offcuts if you have other rectangular pieces available.
- Add optional prices and labour, then calculate.
- Review every layout and dimension table before printing or ordering.
Why total area cannot determine the sheet count
Two parts can have less combined area than one sheet and still fail to fit together. Their lengths, widths and orientation matter. A narrow remaining strip may contain plenty of area but be too narrow for the next component.
For a simple check, enter a 1000 × 1000 mm sheet and four 500 × 500 mm parts, with zero trim and zero kerf. They fit one sheet exactly. Change kerf to 3 mm and four exact half-size squares no longer fit: the cut needs space between neighbouring parts. The planner uses more sheets rather than reducing your requested sizes.
Zero kerf is useful for checking geometry, but it is not a normal assumption for sawing. Use a measured cut width for the actual blade and setup. A small change near a fit boundary can change sheet count substantially.
What the suggested layout does
The engine tries three part-size ordering strategies and two ways of splitting remaining rectangular space. It reserves kerf as parts are placed and respects each part’s rotation setting. Among valid candidates, it prefers fewer newly purchased sheets, then less total used stock area.
Each placement divides a free rectangle into up to two non-overlapping rectangles. This creates a guillotine-style layout: rectangles can be separated through successive straight splits. The drawing and table describe part locations, however, not a workshop cutting sequence or a machine programme.
This is a heuristic search, not proof of the minimum possible sheet count. More elaborate nesting, another stock size or a different manual arrangement may improve the result. Check a supplier’s cutting service or a specialist optimiser where material savings justify a more detailed plan.
Length, width and grain direction
For material with a grain or graphic direction, enter the stock’s grain axis as its length. A part whose rotation is set to No has its entered length along that stock axis. A part set to Yes can turn through 90 degrees if that helps it fit.
For plain MDF or material where direction does not matter, allowing rotation can make more arrangements possible. For veneered panels, printed surfaces and visible wood grain, consider appearance before enabling it. The calculator does not know which face will be visible or how a component will be installed.
Keeping a grain axis consistent does not match the grain pattern across adjacent doors or drawer fronts. Continuous pattern matching requires their relative positions to be constrained together. That is outside this planner; do not rely on matching colours or part IDs to establish it.
Kerf and unusable borders
Kerf is the width of material removed by a cut. The planner reserves it between separated parts and remaining rectangles. If a tiny strip is narrower than the kerf, it is not reported as a reusable offcut.
The optional border describes unusable stock around every edge. A 5 mm border reduces the usable length by 10 mm and usable width by 10 mm. Include the loss needed for your edge preparation within that allowance. It defaults to zero so it remains a deliberate choice.
The same border applies to new sheets, owned full sheets and entered offcuts. If an offcut is already trimmed and you need a different edge allowance for it, account for that when preparing your inputs or run a separate plan. The calculator does not identify factory edges or defects.
Using owned sheets and offcuts
Matching full sheets already owned use the same length and width as new sheets. Other rectangular stock can be entered in the optional offcut section, with its own dimensions and quantity. Use only material with the correct thickness, finish and usable condition.
The current part is fitted into available free space before a new sheet is opened. This helps reuse existing material, but it does not guarantee that every owned offcut will be used or that a greedy early placement is best for later parts. Unused stock is counted separately.
Owned stock adds no new purchase cost. That is useful for deciding what you need to buy today, but it does not mean the material has no business value. If your estimate should charge an allocated stock cost, include it under other costs without also adding it to new-sheet purchases.
Reading the diagrams and parts tables
Each diagram uses the original stock dimensions, with the length axis running left to right. Coloured rectangles identify placed parts; part labels correspond to IDs in the table. Pale dashed rectangles show remaining offcuts, and the border and gaps represent trim or cutting losses.
Coordinates locate the upper-left corner of a part from the original stock’s upper-left corner. They are not blade-centre positions. The placed width and height swap when a part rotates, while the requested cut length and width remain listed separately.
Very small parts may not have readable labels inside the diagram. Use their table entries rather than measuring the screen or printout. The printout is an estimate and dimension reference, not a full-size template.
Offcut area and utilisation
Utilisation divides the total required part area by the gross original area of all stock actually used. That includes owned stock and new sheets, but excludes owned sheets that remain untouched. A high utilisation percentage does not necessarily mean the leftover shapes are useful.
The result separates rectangular offcut area from trim, kerf and unrecoverable slivers. Together with the part area, these balance the area of used stock. The minimum offcut side setting only filters the list; it does not remove pieces from the engine or change the utilisation percentage.
Leftovers still need inspection before reuse. A rectangle in the diagram may have defects, unsuitable grain or handling damage that the calculator cannot detect.
Optional pricing and printing
New-sheet cost uses the number of new sheets opened by the selected plan multiplied by your price per sheet. Add entered labour hours or days, delivery and separately checked consumables, edging, finishing or machining costs as needed.
The tool does not estimate cutting time from the number of parts. Setup, handling, saw capacity and the chosen sequence can change labour substantially. Enter time from your own assessment rather than treating every rectangle as an identical operation.
Markup adds a percentage to cost, then tax applies to the marked-up amount. It is not profit margin. Currency changes display symbols without converting prices. After calculating, Print / Save PDF opens the layouts, quantities and pricing without the guide or optional paid product panel.
Frequently asked questions
Is this guaranteed to use the fewest sheets?
No. It compares six heuristic layouts. It is a useful planning starting point, but a specialist optimiser or checked manual arrangement may improve the result.
Does No rotation keep the grain direction?
It keeps entered part length along stock length. Enter the stock length along its grain axis. It does not match the continuous grain pattern between separate components.
Can I use different material thicknesses together?
No. Run a separate plan for each matching material, thickness and finish. The description is a label, not a material compatibility check.
Why does a small kerf change require another sheet?
Parts close to a fit boundary need enough space for the blade cut. The planner preserves requested part sizes and increases stock where the parts no longer fit.
Can I paste a parts list from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Use five columns: name, length, width, quantity and rotation yes/no. Paste tabs or commas without a header, using the currently selected dimension units.
Are owned offcuts charged as new material?
No. They reduce new purchases but have no new purchase charge. Add any allocated business cost separately if your quote needs it.
Does the diagram tell me which cut to make first?
No. It shows a rectangular layout and coordinates. Plan a practical cutting sequence and suitable support for the equipment before cutting.

Use this planner when you have rectangular parts to cut from plywood, MDF, OSB or other sheet stock. Enter the finished parts, grain restrictions, saw kerf and unusable borders. Review the suggested cuts before ordering; a small area total does not ensure that the parts fit the chosen sheets.
