Connect the gutter order to roofline and drainage quantities
Use actual gutter runs, downpipe drops and the selected system’s effective lengths. Count fittings from the intended layout; stock-length rounding does not determine where outlets or changes of direction belong.
The fascia and soffit calculator estimates separate roofline boards. Use the fall and gradient calculator to convert a supplied fall along the correct flow path, keeping that calculation separate from the gutter purchase length.
For a separately specified surface drainage run, use the channel drainage calculator. These material estimates do not establish a permissible discharge arrangement or prove hydraulic capacity.
MEASURE · CONNECT · PLAN
Guttering calculator for stock lengths, downpipes and fittings
This free guttering calculator estimates whole gutter and downpipe lengths for a measured installation. Add straight runs, repeated sections and fittings from your layout. Optional support spacing, fall calculations, existing stock and job pricing help turn those measurements into a transparent shopping list and printable estimate.
The shortest route is one run and its effective stock length. Add further detail only when it helps. A materials list and a drainage design are different tasks: the calculator does not choose gutter capacity, downpipe diameter or outlet positions from roof area. Those decisions depend on the selected system and the building.
How to use the guttering and downpipe calculator
- Choose metres or feet and an optional project name.
- Enter the effective installed cover length of the gutter or downpipe stock you intend to purchase.
- Add each straight section, select gutter or pipe, and enter its measured length. Use copies for repeated identical sections.
- Enter outlets, stopends, gutter angles, pipe bends and shoes from your installation plan. Review joint-fitting overrides where fittings replace a union.
- Optionally estimate support counts using product-specific spacing and adjust the total for each run where necessary.
- Add spare materials, matching stock, pack sizes and prices only for the items you need.
- Calculate, review the run breakdown and shopping list, then print the results.
Measure runs separately
Measure along the intended gutter line, dividing the layout into meaningful straight sections. A corner or outlet may form a natural break. Measure downpipe sections and straight offset connectors according to the actual joint detail. Do not use vertical height alone when an offset includes additional pipe length, and do not count a bend as straight stock without checking its supplied dimensions.
Each entered run rounds up to whole stock lengths independently. That keeps short pieces needed at different corners from being treated as if they always share usable offcuts. It can overestimate an order where a detailed cutting plan makes better use of remnants. Review suitable offcuts before buying, but do not assume that total project length divided by stock length proves a workable installation.
Nominal length versus effective cover length
Joint engagement, sockets and expansion marks affect how lengths connect. Enter the usable installed cover length consistent with the chosen product and your measured run. The calculator does not assume one universal overlap or expansion allowance. If fittings occupy meaningful distance in your layout, account for that in the straight lengths you enter.
Use one compatible gutter profile and one compatible pipe profile per estimate. Similar nominal sizes from different systems are not automatically interchangeable. Special adaptors, branches and rainwater diverters can be included as separately checked other costs; their quantities are not inferred from run length.
Worked example: two gutter runs
Suppose a property needs an 8 m gutter run and a 5 m run, with effective stock length 4 m. The first run uses two stock lengths and the second also uses two. The base order is four lengths for 13 m installed. With no fitting overrides, each run has one intermediate union, making two unions altogether.
The base stock provides 16 m of effective cover length, leaving 3 m beyond the entered runs before any spare allowance. The calculator does not automatically move that remainder to another run. Add 10% spare allowance to four lengths and the requirement rounds up to five. If one matching whole length is already owned, buy four. Fittings have their own separate allowances and stock settings.
Unions, socketed pipes and layout fittings
For gutter runs, the initial union estimate is one fewer than the stock-piece count. This assumes simple intermediate joins. An outlet or angle can replace a union, so enter a total union override on that run where your detail requires it. A blank override keeps the calculated count; zero explicitly excludes those fittings.
Socketed downpipe lengths may join without separate connectors. That is the default pipe assumption. Plain lengths instead start with one separate connector between adjacent pieces. You can override either count after reviewing the actual product. This distinction prevents adding a connector charge merely because two socketed pieces meet.
Outlets, stopends, angles, individual pipe bends and shoes are entered separately. All counts apply per copy of the run. A swan-neck offset commonly uses more than one bend, so enter individual fittings rather than a count of offset pairs. Do not infer how many outlets a roof needs from these material calculations.
Brackets and downpipe clips
Support estimating is optional because a valid spacing depends on the system, conditions and fitting arrangement. The baseline uses the run length divided by the entered maximum spacing, rounded up, plus one support. This corresponds to an assumed support at both ends and evenly spaced intervals between them.
It is not a bracket-position drawing. Unions or outlets may have their own fixing points; supports may also be required near angles, stopends, sockets or bends. Replace the baseline with a total support count for that run when you have checked the actual layout. The override replaces the total rather than adding extras to it.
FloPlast’s published guidance illustrates why product data matters: its general fascia-bracket spacing guidance includes qualifications for profiles and configurations, while downpipe clips also depend on sockets and fittings. Use the guidance for your selected system and loading conditions, rather than treating an example spacing as universal.
Fall and longest flow path
The optional fall calculation reports the vertical drop for a specified ratio. For a 1 in 350 gradient over a 7 m flow path, the arithmetic drop is 20 mm. This is a worked ratio example, not a recommendation for every gutter. The correct gradient and installation details come from the system design.
A centre outlet can shorten the longest flow path. Enter that path as a run override; leaving it blank uses the full run length. The calculator does not automatically divide every run in half because outlet positions can be uneven. Roof catchment area, rainfall intensity, gutter profile, bends and outlet configuration belong in a separate hydraulic capacity assessment.
Purchasing and optional job costs
Spare allowance is applied to each base item count, then rounded up to a whole requirement. Matching owned units reduce new purchases. The remainder rounds up to complete purchase packs. Enter price per individual length or fitting, even when it is sold in a multipack. This keeps the shopping list and costs consistent.
Labour can use gutter length only, combined gutter and pipe length, hours or days. Length-based labour excludes spare material. Time pricing can better describe fascia repairs, removal, awkward access or complex offsets. Extras can cover delivery, access equipment, disposal and separately assessed adaptors. Avoid entering an item twice. Markup adds to total cost; tax applies after markup. Currency selection changes display symbols only.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tell me what gutter size I need?
No. It estimates materials for a specified layout. Confirm drainage capacity, gutter profile, pipe size and outlets using the manufacturer’s design method or suitable project advice.
Are downpipes created automatically from outlets?
No. Add pipe runs separately, using their measured lengths. An outlet count alone does not describe pipe height, offsets or discharge arrangement.
Can I combine different gutter profiles?
Use separate estimates for different stock profiles or incompatible systems. The calculator pools one gutter product and one pipe product within an estimate.
Why can a shorter run still need two lengths?
Any run longer than one effective stock length needs another piece. Purchases round up per run rather than using only the total project length.
What does a blank override mean?
Blank keeps the calculated default. Zero sets that run’s joint fitting or support count to zero. Support overrides are ignored while support estimating is off.
Can I enter measurements from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Bulk entry accepts twelve comma-separated or tab-separated columns with clear units and per-copy counts. Switching between cards and bulk entry retains the values.
Is the printout free?
Yes. Print / Save PDF creates a result-only estimate with the material list, project name, date and entered costs. The Quote & Invoice Generator is a separate optional product.
