Fascia and soffit calculator for roofline materials and costs
This free fascia and soffit calculator estimates fascia board purchases, optional soffit cuts or coverage packs, and selected roofline accessories. It works with individual runs and repeated matching sections, keeping quantities separate from optional costs so you can use it for a quick material check or a fuller job estimate.
Choose fascia, soffit or both. Enter actual run lengths, then add the soffit depth only where soffit material is needed. The additional ventilation, trims, trays, joints, corners and fixing sections are optional estimating tools for a system that has already been specified.
How to use the calculator
- Select metres and millimetres or feet and inches.
- Enter each measured roofline run and the number of identical copies.
- For soffits, enter the actual cross-eaves cut depth; zero skips that run.

Measuring fascia and bargeboard runs
Use the actual length along the roofline. A sloping bargeboard needs its sloping length, not the horizontal distance beneath it. Measure separate straight runs individually so the purchase estimate can show where each run needs more than one stock board.
The fascia calculation rounds each run up separately. A 6 m run using 5 m stock boards needs two boards in this conservative purchase method. Two separate 6 m runs therefore use four baseline boards. The calculator does not assume that an offcut from one run will suit another run, because supported joins, profile direction and corner details can prevent that reuse.
Use one matching profile per estimate. Fascia and bargeboard can differ in depth, shape or decorative detail. If they use different products, calculate them separately and combine the checked costs. Whole spare boards add to the baseline; matching whole boards already available reduce the new purchases.
Minimum joints and the actual installation plan
For each straight run, the minimum number of internal board joints is the number of boards minus one. Two boards make one minimum joint, while three make two. Copies repeat those joints. The optional joint-piece section can use this baseline plus extra specified pieces, or a manually entered count.
This minimum does not include corners, soffit joints or additional joins required by support positions and cutting choices. It also does not establish the expansion clearances for the product. Use the manufacturer’s detail and an actual installation plan to confirm where joints go and which accessory covers them.
Estimating soffit pieces cut across the eaves
In cross-cut mode, the stock board runs through the saw in pieces matching the entered soffit depth. Each finished piece then spans across the eaves, while its effective cover width determines how many pieces are needed along the roofline. Use effective fitted width after any interlocking joint rather than assuming nominal face width is identical.
For a 6 m run with 300 mm effective cover, 20 pieces cover the run. If each piece is 400 mm deep and stock boards are 5 m long, 12 pieces fit in one stock length with a 3 mm kerf between pieces. That run therefore needs two baseline stock boards. This is an arithmetic example; the actual product must be suitable for the intended use.
The yield formula allows for saw cuts between pieces. A final piece that exactly uses the uncut stock end does not need an extra kerf beyond the board. The method assumes usable square stock ends and does not include end trimming. Set a deliberate spare quantity and check the cut plan if damaged ends or handling losses are expected.
Copies within the same row share the same depth and can share its calculated stock yield. Different rows round up separately and do not automatically reuse offcuts. If a soffit depth is longer than the stock board, the estimate stops instead of inventing an unsupported join.
Using soffit coverage packs
Pack mode multiplies each run length by its entered soffit depth and copies, adds the area allowance and divides by usable coverage per pack. Purchases round to whole packs. It is useful when a supplier provides a reliable fitted coverage figure and you do not need a cross-cut yield estimate.
The pack method does not describe a sheet layout or prove that short offcuts can be reused. For complex returns, irregular eaves or sheet-based systems, check the actual layout before ordering. When changing between cross-cut boards and packs, review retained prices, stock and spare counts because the purchase unit changes.
Ventilation strips, edge trims and eaves trays
The optional linear-material sections use a measured run and effective coverage per purchased length. Effective coverage should reflect any required overlap. Adding a separate allowance for the same overlap would double count it, so use the coverage and spare fields consistently.
The calculator adds your percentage allowance, subtracts usable matching stock and rounds to whole pieces. It does not nest individual cuts or determine whether a joint is acceptable. Use one matching product within each category; different edge profiles or ventilation products may require separate quantities.
Ventilation is a design requirement that depends on the roof and chosen system. An entered strip length does not establish adequate free area or a clear airflow path. The tool also does not assess felt condition, insulation position, roof support or whether a tray detail suits the building.
Counted accessories and fixing purchases
Joint pieces, one corner type, one end or finial type and one fixing type can each be estimated as whole items. Enter the specified count, subtract matching items already owned and divide by the number in each purchase pack. If a supplier sells the accessory singly, use one item per pack.
Do not combine incompatible corner shapes or fixing types into a single line just because their prices are similar. Use separate estimates or a separately assessed other-cost allowance. Fixing quantities should come from the actual fixing schedule; this calculator does not choose centres, embedment or structural capacity.
Cap-over, replacement and project costs
Cap-over and replacement fascia are different product choices. The calculator can estimate quantities for the profile you enter, but it cannot decide whether existing timber is sound or whether a board can carry the intended roofline loads. Confirm the specification and support condition before relying on a material order.
Labour can use roofline length, entered soffit area, hours or days. Length labour counts the entered roofline once, including copies, even when both fascia and soffit materials are enabled. Choose a rate that reflects the work included. Other costs can cover separately assessed access, removal, disposal and repairs without adding them twice.
All prices are optional. Use consistent pretax inputs; markup adds to total cost and tax applies afterwards. Markup is different from profit margin. Currency selection changes the symbol without converting prices through an exchange rate. The free printout includes assumptions and the materials breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate fascia without soffit?
Yes. Fascia is enabled initially. Leave soffit off and enter the roofline length and fascia stock length. Soffit depth can remain zero.
Can I calculate soffit only?
Yes. Enable soffit and switch fascia off. Enter a positive soffit depth on at least one run. Use manual joint counts if estimating accessories without fascia.
Does it reuse fascia offcuts across runs?
No. Each run and copy rounds separately. This makes the assumption clear, but a checked cutting plan may find opportunities to reduce the order.
What does soffit projection mean here?
It is the actual cross-eaves piece depth used in the cut or area estimate. Apply the product’s fitting-clearance requirements when measuring it; the calculator does not insert an expansion gap automatically.
Does it calculate roof ventilation requirements?
No. It estimates quantities for a separately specified ventilation product. It does not calculate required free area or check the roof’s airflow path.
Are corner and fixing quantities automatic?
No. Enter the specified counts. Only the optional straight fascia joint baseline is inferred from the separate runs and stock length, and the actual joint plan may need more.
Can I print without buying the quote tool?
