One unit means one batten stock length, one full panel, or one coverage pack, according to the method. Stock reduces new purchases; order packs round up after stock. Wall panelling calculator for balanced bays and material orders

This free wall panelling calculator helps plan decorative shaker grids, board-and-batten wainscoting, full wall panels and products supplied by pack coverage. Measure a single feature wall or add several sections. The results show clear bay dimensions or panel quantities, whole purchases and optional job costs. A printable estimate is free, without an account.

Start with the method that matches how your material is fitted and sold. A decorative batten grid needs individual cut lengths; a sheet layout needs whole pieces along both wall dimensions; a pack sold by coverage uses area. These methods can give different orders for the same wall because they account for different installation constraints.

How to use the wall panelling calculator

  1. Choose Metric or Imperial and enter an optional project name.
  2. Select grid, full panels or manufacturer pack coverage. Enter the corresponding material dimensions.
  3. Measure the width and outer height of each rectangular panelling section. Exclude existing skirting below the new work.
  4. For a grid, choose columns and rows of clear bays. Use wall overrides for a different arrangement on another section.
  5. Add openings where they should reduce area-based materials and labour. Check the separate rules for whole-panel and batten layouts.
  6. Enter deliberate extra allowance, matching stock and purchase pack size. Add backing, adhesive or prices only when useful.
  7. Calculate, inspect the breakdown and cut plan, then print the estimate.

Balanced shaker and board-and-batten spacing

The grid includes a batten at both sides, plus battens between the clear openings. For four columns there are five vertical battens. The width remaining after those battens is shared equally among the four bays. Top and bottom rails span the full wall width. Vertical battens stop between those rails; intermediate horizontal pieces fit between the verticals.

This construction convention avoids double-counting intersections. It is one common way to build a grid, but your joinery detail may differ. The calculator assumes one batten face width and stock profile throughout. If the cap, side stiles or bottom rail have different profiles, estimate those separately and include their cost under other costs.

Worked grid example

Take a wall section 3 m wide and 1.2 m high, with 100 mm battens, four columns and one row. Five vertical battens occupy 0.5 m of the width, leaving four clear bays each 0.625 m wide. The clear height is 1 m after the top and bottom rails. The cut list contains two 3 m rails and five 1 m vertical pieces, for 11 m of installed batten.

With 3 m stock lengths and zero cutting kerf, the longest-first plan needs four stock lengths: two full rails, three verticals from one length, and two from another. Real saw cuts consume material. Enter the actual kerf and review the resulting plan; do not assume that three nominal 1 m cuts will fit a nominal 3 m length with a positive kerf.

Why a cut plan differs from total length

Dividing 11 m by a 3 m stock length gives a lower bound, not a cutting layout. Individual parts must fit the available lengths. The calculator sorts cuts from longest to shortest and places each into the first compatible remaining stock length. This gives a practical feasible plan but is not guaranteed to find the mathematical minimum.

Every required piece must fit one stock length. The tool does not insert unrequested joints into an overlong rail. Choose suitable longer stock or split the wall into sections at a deliberate acceptable joint. Stock already owned is counted as matching whole lengths; arbitrary offcuts need a separate cutting assessment. The extra percentage buys additional whole lengths after the base cut plan.

Full panels and coverage packs

For full panels, enter effective cover width and height in the intended orientation. The calculator rounds up the number needed across the wall and up the number needed vertically, then multiplies them. Each wall is calculated separately. An edge strip still requires a whole panel, and the remainder is not automatically reused elsewhere. This makes the result a straightforward rectangular layout estimate, not a two-dimensional nesting optimiser.

Swapping dimensions lets you compare rotation only if the grain, pattern and product specification permit it. Matching a slatted finish or tongue-and-groove joint can restrict reuse and direction. Small joint clearances may affect effective cover dimensions; use actual product data.

Manufacturer coverage mode pools net wall area and divides by usable pack coverage. It is suitable when the supplier sells mixed lengths or an area-based box. It does not prove that each piece fits your walls. Allow for cuts and match the coverage figure to the actual pack. For example, Porter’s published oak wall panelling specification describes coverage per carton and whole-carton purchasing; those figures are product-specific, not universal defaults.

Doors, windows and interrupted layouts

Openings reduce the net area used for coverage packs, backing, adhesive and area labour. They do not reduce the grid cut list or full-panel layout automatically. A small window cut out of a panel may save no purchased panel at all. Likewise, a doorway’s position changes batten cuts in ways that cannot be derived from its area alone.

For a doorway splitting the design, enter the clear left, right and upper rectangles when they represent your intended layout. Do not also enter the complete wall over those sections. Deduct an opening only once. Where decorative lines continue around a window, prepare a dimensioned detail and adjust the purchasing allowance after checking the cut plan.

Optional backing, adhesive and costs

A painted wall may already form the visible background to a batten grid, so separate backing starts off. If sheets are needed, enter their effective coverage per purchase unit and a considered cutting allowance. This backing estimate uses area and does not nest sheet cuts. Leave it off if the main panels already supply the backing.

Adhesive coverage depends on product, bead pattern and surface. Enter the actual coverage per cartridge for your application. The tool uses net wall area as the basis; it does not infer a bead length from a decorative grid or specify how panels must be fixed. Manufacturer preparation, moisture, movement and fixing instructions remain relevant.

Labour can use net wall area, hours or days. Time pricing can better represent sockets, corners, surface preparation and detailed joinery. Extras can include paint, capping, delivery and fixings. Avoid pricing the same item twice. Markup adds a percentage to total cost, then tax applies to the marked-up amount. Markup is not profit margin, and changing currency does not exchange-convert prices.

Frequently asked questions

What height should my wainscoting be?

That is a design choice depending on the room, existing skirting, furniture and proportions. Enter the outer height you intend to build. The calculator does not impose a universal decorative height.

Are the bay dimensions measured between battens?

Yes. Clear bay dimensions describe the visible gaps after subtracting the battens. They are not the distance between batten centres.

Can each wall use a different grid?

Yes. Enter columns and rows under that wall’s optional layout overrides. Blank fields inherit the defaults. Overrides remain stored when you switch to a different material method.

Does the calculator reuse offcuts?

The batten plan reuses available length within its longest-first packing plan. Full panels do not reuse edge offcuts across wall rows or sections. Area-based packs do not model individual cuts.

Why did adding saw kerf increase the order?

Several cuts that add up exactly to a stock length may no longer fit once the saw removes material. The plan includes entered kerf and can require another stock length.

Does this calculate separate picture-frame mouldings?

No. Grid mode uses shared battens at adjoining bays. Separate decorative frames have their own perimeter cuts and mitres. Use a separate measured moulding estimate for that layout.

Can I use Imperial measurements?

Yes. Wall and product lengths use feet, small batten dimensions use inches, and areas use square feet. Switching units converts entered dimensions and active area labour rates while retaining layout overrides.
