How to Calculate Plasterboard, Drywall Sheets and Stud Wall Materials

Working out how much plasterboard or drywall you need can become surprisingly complicated once a project includes several walls, doors, windows, ceilings, stud framing, insulation and finishing materials.

How to Calculate How Many Plasterboard Sheets You Need
Start by measuring the length and height of each wall. Multiplying the two gives the wall area. For example, a wall measuring 4 metres long by 2.4 metres high has a gross area of 9.6 square metres.
If the wall contains doors or windows, their area can be deducted. If you are building a partition and boarding both sides, the remaining net wall area is then counted twice because both faces require board.
Once the total boarded area is known, a waste allowance is added. This is important because plasterboard and drywall sheets normally require cutting and you will rarely use every offcut perfectly.
What Waste Percentage Should You Use?
There is no single waste percentage that suits every job. Straight, simple walls with a sensible board layout may produce relatively little waste, while rooms with many small wall sections, openings, awkward angles or complicated cuts can require more.
A value around 10% is often a useful starting estimate, but the calculator deliberately leaves this editable so you can increase or decrease it to suit the project you are pricing.
Common Plasterboard and Drywall Sheet Sizes
Sheet sizes vary between countries, suppliers and board types. In the UK and other metric markets, common plasterboard dimensions include 1200 × 2400 mm, 1200 × 2700 mm and 1200 × 3000 mm. Smaller widths, including 900 mm boards, are also available.
In North America, common drywall sheet sizes include 4 × 8 ft, 4 × 10 ft and 4 × 12 ft. Board thickness also varies depending on the intended application.
The calculator allows you to select standard sheet sizes or enter your own custom dimensions. This means it can also be used for moisture resistant board, fire-rated board, acoustic board or other specialist sheet products where the supplier uses different dimensions.
How the Stud Wall Framing Estimate Works
When framing is enabled, the calculator estimates the number of vertical framing members using the wall length and your chosen stud spacing.
For example, if a 4.8 metre wall uses studs at 600 mm centres, there are eight spaces across the wall. Allowing a framing member at both ends gives an estimated nine base studs before opening allowances are added.
Doors and windows require additional framing, so the calculator adds an estimating allowance for extra vertical members and horizontal framing around those openings.
Timber Studs vs Metal Studs
The same basic estimating approach can be used for timber stud walls and metal stud/track systems, but the products themselves are different. Choose the framing type and enter the actual stock lengths and prices available from your supplier.
Estimating Drywall Screws, Joint Tape and Compound
Screw quantities depend on the board size, stud spacing, fixing pattern, ceiling or wall application and the instructions supplied with the board system. Rather than pretending there is one universal screw count, this calculator uses an editable screw rate.
Wall and ceiling screw rates are separate because ceilings can require a different fixing pattern. Once the estimated number of screws has been calculated, it is converted into whole boxes using the box size you enter.
Joint tape is also difficult to calculate perfectly from floor area alone because the final amount depends on board orientation, joints, corners and offcuts. For that reason, the calculator uses an editable tape-consumption allowance rather than claiming to optimise the exact board layout.
Joint compound or filler is calculated from the product coverage you enter. This is usually more useful than assuming every compound, plaster or finishing system has the same coverage.
How Insulation Is Calculated Inside a Stud Wall
A common estimating mistake is to use the total plasterboard area for insulation. A partition boarded on both sides might require 20 m² of plasterboard while containing only approximately 10 m² of wall cavity.
This calculator therefore bases wall insulation on the physical wall or cavity area, with openings deducted, rather than the total area of both plasterboard faces.
You can then enter the coverage supplied by each insulation pack, choose your waste allowance and add the price per pack.
Detailed Entry or Bulk Project Entry?
Detailed Wall-by-Wall Entry
Detailed Entry is the recommended option for most users. Add each wall separately, enter its dimensions and include any doors or windows. It is particularly useful for single rooms, partition walls, extensions, renovations and normal handyman or contractor jobs.
Bulk Project Entry
Bulk Entry is intended as a shortcut for larger projects where you already know the total boarded wall area, ceiling area and physical wall area. Rather than entering dozens of individual wall sections, those project totals can be entered directly.
For framing, Bulk Entry also allows an overall framed wall length, typical height, number of separate wall runs and approximate door and window counts.
Using the Calculator to Price a Plasterboard or Drywall Job
Material quantity is only one part of job pricing. Contractors can also enter board prices, framing prices, fixing and finishing costs, insulation, additional consumables, labour and other project expenses.
Other job costs might include delivery, waste disposal, parking, travel, equipment hire or subcontractor charges. Including these expenses gives a more realistic total job cost before you apply your markup.
Markup Is Not the Same as Profit Margin
The calculator deliberately keeps markup and gross profit margin separate. If a job costs £1,000 and you add a 25% markup, the selling price becomes £1,250. Your gross profit is £250, but the resulting gross profit margin is 20%, not 25%.
This distinction is important when pricing trade work because confusing markup with margin can result in lower profitability than expected.

How do I calculate how many plasterboard sheets I need?
Calculate the total area being boarded, subtract any openings that will not require board, multiply by two if both sides of a partition are being covered, add your waste allowance, then divide the result by the area of one plasterboard sheet. Always round the final sheet quantity up to a whole board.
Does the calculator deduct doors and windows?
Yes. In Detailed Entry you can add doors, windows or other openings to individual walls and choose whether each opening should be deducted from the plasterboard area.
Can I calculate plasterboard for both sides of a stud wall?
Yes. Select “Both sides” for the wall and the calculator will count both plasterboard faces while still treating the wall cavity as one physical wall for insulation purposes.
What plasterboard waste allowance should I use?
The right allowance depends on the room and board layout. Around 10% can be a useful starting estimate for many jobs, but simple layouts may need less and complicated layouts may need more. The calculator allows you to change the percentage.
Does this calculator work with drywall in the USA and Canada?
Yes. Switch the calculator to Imperial measurements to work in feet and inches and choose common 4 × 8, 4 × 10 or 4 × 12 ft drywall sheets. Several currencies are also available.
Can I use custom plasterboard or drywall sheet sizes?
Yes. Select the custom sheet option and enter the actual width and length of the board you intend to buy.
How does the calculator estimate wall studs?
It uses the wall length and selected centre-to-centre stud spacing to estimate the base vertical framing, then adds an allowance for selected doors and windows.
Does it calculate timber and metal stud framing?
Yes. You can select timber studs or metal stud/track framing and enter your own stock lengths and prices.
Does the calculator tell me exactly how to structurally frame a wall?
No. The framing section estimates material quantities only. Structural requirements, reinforcement, headers and opening details must be determined from the appropriate construction system, manufacturer guidance and local requirements.
How many drywall screws do I need?
Screw requirements vary according to the board system, framing centres and fixing pattern. The calculator therefore uses editable wall and ceiling screw rates instead of claiming one fixed quantity is correct for every installation.
Can it estimate joint tape and drywall compound?
Yes. Tape is estimated using an adjustable usage rate and joint compound is based on the coverage per tub, bag or pack that you enter.
Can I include insulation in the estimate?
Yes. Enter the insulation coverage per pack, waste percentage and pack price. For walls, the calculation uses the physical cavity area rather than counting both plasterboard faces.
Can tradespeople use this to price jobs?
Yes. In addition to material quantities, you can enter material prices, labour, additional project costs and a cost markup. The results then show total job cost, suggested selling price, gross profit and resulting gross profit margin.
Is markup the same as profit margin?
No. Markup is normally calculated as a percentage of your cost, while gross profit margin is the profit expressed as a percentage of the final selling price.
Can I print or save the plasterboard calculation?
Yes. Once the calculation is complete, use the Print / Save PDF option in the results section to create a cleaner record of the quantities, shopping list and job estimate.
Is the calculator suitable for large projects?
