How to Calculate Decking Boards, Joists, Materials and Deck Cost
The Handyman Hub Decking Calculator is designed to do considerably more than a basic decking board calculator. What Does the Decking Calculator Calculate?

How to Use the Deck Material Calculator
Enter the deck dimensions
Measure the overall length and width of the rectangular deck area and choose whether your decking boards will run along the length or across the width.
Enter the actual decking board size
Enter the actual installed face width of the decking rather than relying on a nominal product description. Then enter the intended gap between adjacent boards.
Enter the stock board length
If your supplier sells decking in fixed lengths such as 3.6 m, 4.2 m, 4.8 m or an imperial equivalent, enter that actual length. This allows the calculator to estimate whole boards rather than simply returning a linear total.
Enter your framing specification
Enter the joist spacing, beam layout, post spacing and other structural dimensions already determined for your project. The calculator estimates materials from those inputs; it does not design the structure.

How the Decking Board Calculator Works
A decking calculator needs to account for both the width of each board and the gap between boards. Simply dividing the deck width by the board width can overestimate the quantity because the spacing between boards also contributes to the overall coverage.
If the decking boards run along the deck length, the calculator treats the deck width as the dimension that must be filled with board rows.
The reason for adding the gap to the deck width is that a deck with several boards has gaps between the boards, but normally does not have an additional full gap outside both outer edges.
This gives the theoretical linear metres or linear feet of decking installed on the finished deck.
Useful extra: the results also estimate the face width required from the final board row. If the deck dimensions do not divide neatly by the board width and gap, the last board may need to be ripped or trimmed to width.
Why Deck Board Length Matters
One of the most important differences between this tool and a basic decking calculator is the treatment of stock board lengths.
Knowing that a project requires 100 linear metres or 330 linear feet of decking does not automatically tell you how many boards to order. The result depends on the lengths actually available from your supplier and how the boards need to be cut.
Simple Example
Imagine each decking row must cover a run of 4.8 metres, but your supplier only sells 3.6 metre boards.
Each row cannot be created from one 3.6 m board, so the basic purchasing calculation requires two stock boards for that row.
However, cutting the second board to complete the row leaves an offcut. Depending on the deck layout, joist positions, joint requirements and the decking system, that offcut may sometimes be reusable elsewhere.
Conservative Purchase vs Potential Offcut Reuse
The calculator therefore keeps two ideas separate.

How the Deck Joist Calculator Works
Decking boards and joists normally run perpendicular to each other. If the decking boards run along the deck length, the joists will normally cross beneath them and run across the deck width.
The calculator does not decide what joist spacing your deck should use. Instead, you enter the maximum centres required for your particular project, decking product or approved design.
The additional joist accounts for both outside edges. The tool then calculates the actual equal spacing produced by that number of bays.

Why Joist Timber Length Cannot Always Be Calculated Using Linear Metres Alone
The same stock-length problem applies to joists and other framing timber.
For example, suppose a deck needs 12 joists measuring 3 metres each. The theoretical requirement is:
If the timber merchant sells 4.8 m lengths, simply calculating 36 ÷ 4.8 would suggest that 8 lengths are enough. But each 4.8 m stock length can only produce one complete 3 m joist.
Eight stock lengths therefore cannot produce twelve continuous 3 m joists.
The Handyman Hub calculator instead determines how many complete joist pieces can be cut from each entered stock length. It will not automatically assume that short joists can be joined or spliced.
This is why the tool displays both the theoretical linear timber requirement and the realistic whole stock-length purchasing quantity.
How Many Decking Screws or Hidden Fasteners Do I Need?
If you know how many fixings your decking system requires at each board-to-joist intersection, the calculator can estimate the total fixing quantity.
You can then add an extra fixing allowance and enter the number of screws, clips or hidden fasteners supplied in each pack.
The calculator rounds the result up to the next complete pack and shows both the actual number purchased and the estimated surplus.

How Wastage and Whole-Unit Purchasing Are Handled
Building materials often cannot be purchased in exact fractional quantities. For this reason the calculator always rounds upward when a material must be bought as a complete physical unit.

Separate wastage percentages are available for several materials. This is more useful than applying one blanket percentage to an entire project because decking, timber, membrane and fixings can have very different waste characteristics.
Using the Decking Cost Calculator for Customer Pricing

Measure or confirm the actual covering face width rather than assuming the product description represents its installed width.
Ignoring the Board Gap
The gap between boards contributes to the total width covered by a row of decking and therefore affects board quantity.
Buying From Linear Metres Alone
Total linear length does not always translate directly into the correct number of fixed-length boards or joists.
Assuming Every Offcut Is Reusable
An offcut may have enough length but still be unusable because a joint does not land on suitable support or satisfy the installation specification.
Forgetting Whole Packs
Screws, clips, membrane, coatings and other products normally need to be purchased in complete packs, rolls or containers.

How do I calculate how much decking I need?
Start with the deck dimensions, then determine which direction the boards will run. Divide the dimension across the board rows using the actual board face width plus the board gap. Multiply the resulting number of rows by the board run length to obtain the installed linear requirement. If buying fixed-length boards, also calculate how those lengths can physically cover each row. The calculator above performs these steps automatically.
Does this decking calculator work in metres and feet?
Yes. Select Metric for metres, millimetres and square metres, or Imperial for feet, inches and square feet. The underlying calculations are converted internally so the same logic is used for both measurement systems.
Does the calculator work for composite decking?
Yes. You can enter your own composite decking board width, gap, stock board length, price and fixing requirements. Always use the dimensions and installation requirements supplied for the particular composite decking system you are using.
Why does board length affect how many decking boards I need?
Because decking is normally purchased in fixed physical lengths. A project may theoretically require 100 linear metres of decking, but the number of boards you need depends on how the available stock lengths can be cut to cover each board run. Cutting can create surplus or reusable offcuts, so total linear length alone does not always produce a realistic purchasing quantity.
Does the calculator reuse decking offcuts?
The primary purchasing figure is deliberately conservative and does not assume that every offcut can be reused. Where sufficient board and joist layout information is available, the calculator may also show a potential optimised stock-length estimate. Actual offcut reuse depends on suitable joint locations and the requirements of the decking installation.
How does the deck joist calculator determine the number of joists?
You enter the maximum joist centres already specified for your project. The calculator divides the relevant deck dimension into enough spaces that the entered maximum is not exceeded, adds the outer joist, and shows the resulting actual equal spacing.
Does this calculator tell me what joist spacing I should use?
No. Joist spacing depends on factors such as the decking product, joist material, span, loads, structural design and local requirements. Enter the spacing appropriate for your project and the calculator will estimate the resulting material quantity.
Does the calculator determine joist or beam sizes?
