Order gabion fill from the basket schedule
Start with the actual basket sizes and quantities in the supplied layout. Facing stone is part of the basket fill, so separate it from the core instead of adding a second full basket volume.
Use the excavation calculator for separately specified ground removal, and the French drain calculator for any separately designed aggregate-and-pipe drainage. Neither estimate establishes the stability or retaining capacity of a gabion structure.

Calculate gabion baskets and stone from a specified schedule
This free gabion basket and stone calculator estimates the material quantities for baskets you have already selected. Add each basket size, its quantity and any matching empty baskets you own. The basic result gives total basket count and geometric fill volume. Optional stone purchasing, separate facing material, delivery loads and job pricing turn the measured schedule into a more complete estimate.
Use it for a mixture of rectangular basket sizes or repeated identical cages. Rows can represent different courses, locations or products, provided each row contains one size and price. Bulk entry accepts seven columns from notes or a spreadsheet. The same calculation engine handles both entry methods, so changing views does not change the geometry.
Begin with actual baskets, not the outline of the wall
Enter length, depth and height for the filled capacity of each basket type. Depth is the front-to-back dimension. Total basket quantity includes every course and repeated run using that type. If a wall steps back or changes depth, enter the separate basket sizes rather than multiplying the largest outside dimensions of the whole wall.
The calculator does not automatically choose the number of baskets across a wall or the width of a structural base. Those choices depend on the design, allowable basket sizes and site requirements. A materials schedule is the starting point, not an output claiming structural suitability. Rectangular basket volume is length times depth times height, multiplied by the number of baskets.
Matching empty baskets already owned reduce only basket purchases. They still require stone, so their volume remains included. Do not enter already-filled installed baskets as empty stock. If part of a project is already complete, estimate only the baskets and fill that remain to be supplied.
Volume and stone weight are different quantities
Basket volume includes the voids between placed stones. Stone mass therefore depends on the material, grading and placement. For weight or bag purchasing, enter the specified as-placed bulk density: stone mass per unit volume of filled basket. Solid-rock density describes the mineral without the spaces and would overstate the quantity in this model.
There is no universal density preset. Confirm the value with your supplier or specification for the expected filling method. If the supplier gives a figure in tonnes per cubic metre, convert tonnes to kilograms before entering the metric field. For example, 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre is 1,600 kg/m³. This is a unit-conversion example, not a recommended density for every gabion stone.
Volume-only mode provides geometric quantities without assigning a stone price. Loose volume orders round up to your order increment. Loose weight orders convert with density and round to a weight increment. Whole-bag orders divide by the stated bag mass and round up before deducting usable whole bags already owned. A commercial bulk bag must use its stated weight rather than an assumed one-tonne content.
Separate facing stone without counting it twice
The optional facing section estimates a uniform decorative layer on one or both length-by-height faces of every entered basket. Enter the specified layer depth. That volume replaces main or core stone, so the calculator subtracts it from the full basket before estimating the core. It never adds a decorative layer on top of a full basket of core material.
One face means one length-by-height side. Two faces means the opposing sides, with both layer depths deducted from basket depth. The calculator rejects facing that would exceed the depth of any basket. It does not separately face the short ends, top or bottom, and it does not detect which sides are hidden against another basket. If only some baskets need facing, calculate those as a separate estimate.
Facing and core use their own reserve, density and purchase method. This is useful when the materials are supplied differently, but both must comply with the specified infill requirements. The calculation is not permission to use unsuitable rubble or weak material in a structural core. Mesh aperture, durability, grading and placement remain design and supplier decisions.
Add reserve deliberately
Reserve is applied to each stone's geometric volume before any density conversion or purchase rounding. It starts at zero. Use a percentage justified by the project for handling, selection or quantity uncertainty. Purchase rounding already creates some surplus, so check the result before stacking multiple allowances for the same reason.
Different facing and core reserves can make sense when one material requires more selection than the other. The report keeps their geometric volumes, reserve-adjusted volumes, required mass and new purchases separate. That makes it easier to discuss an order with a supplier and to identify where additional quantity came from.
A worked basket and facing example
Two baskets each measuring 2 m long, 1 m deep and 1 m high contain 4 m³ of fill altogether. If a specified 200 mm layer is used on one length-by-height face, the facing occupies 0.4 m³ per basket, or 0.8 m³ total. The remaining main stone volume is 3.2 m³.
With 10% main-stone reserve and an entered as-placed density of 1,600 kg/m³, main stone requires 5,632 kg. At 800 kg per bag this rounds to eight bags; owning one usable matching bag reduces the new purchase to seven. With no facing reserve and an entered density of 1,700 kg/m³, facing requires 1,360 kg. An order increment of 100 kg rounds it to 1,400 kg.
These are arithmetic fixtures to explain the calculator. The basket dimensions, layer depth and densities must be replaced with the specified values for a real project. The calculator does not infer mesh strength, wall stability or whether a facing/core arrangement is suitable.
Estimate stone delivery loads
Delivery estimation is optional and requires weight-based purchases for all active stone types. It combines the mass of new orders after bag rounding and owned-bag deductions, then divides by your entered usable stone payload and rounds up to whole loads. It does not use the unrounded theoretical mass if you are actually buying more stone in complete bags.
The worked example orders seven 800 kg main-stone bags plus 1,400 kg of facing stone: 7,000 kg in total. At an entered usable stone payload of 3,000 kg, the arithmetic result is three loads. This assumes the stone types can share deliveries. Supplier segregation, bag dimensions, vehicle volume, basket weight, access and unloading arrangements can change the real delivery plan.
Assembly materials, labour and pricing
Check whether the quoted basket includes lacing wire, helicoils, diaphragms or braces. Add assessed accessory and foundation costs under other whole-job costs only when they are not already bundled. The calculator does not invent a universal bracing or lacing quantity because cage systems and installation details differ.
Labour can use filled basket volume, hours or days. Volume pricing uses geometric basket capacity before stone reserve. Time pricing can better represent hand-facing, difficult access or assembly work that does not scale directly with volume. Use one labour method to avoid double counting.
Material purchases, selected delivery loads, labour and extras form the estimated cost. Markup is added to that cost, then entered tax applies. All prices should use a consistent pretax basis. Currency selection changes symbols only. Switching measurement units converts existing basket dimensions, density and applicable prices. Closing a pricing section keeps its values; disabling facing or delivery excludes that option while preserving its inputs.
Supplier information and design limits
Consult the selected supplier's gabion installation information and stone infill guidance. Product-specific Corden gabion technical information is another example of the system details that must be checked for the actual cage being used.
This calculator covers rectangular material quantities. It does not establish bearing capacity, sliding resistance, overturning stability, drainage behind a wall, safe stacking height or foundation design. Estimated filled volume and stone mass are purchasing information, not a structural certificate. Follow the engineer's specification and the chosen basket system's current instructions.

Does it choose a safe gabion wall size?
No. Enter the basket schedule from a specified layout. Structural dimensions, foundations and stability require a separate assessment.
What density should I use?
Use the specified as-placed bulk density for stone in the filled basket. It includes voids between stones and is different from solid-rock density.
Can I mix basket sizes?
Yes. Add a row for each size, quantity and price. Bulk entry supports the same schedule.
Does owned basket stock reduce stone?
No. Owned baskets are assumed empty and still need filling. Only basket purchases reduce.
Is facing stone added to the full core volume?
No. Its layer volume replaces core stone. One or both length-side faces can be included.
Are delivery loads guaranteed?
No. They are calculated from ordered stone mass and your usable payload. Supplier loading, vehicle volume and access must also be confirmed.
