Choose the membrane role before planning rolls
Use this calculator to compare roll directions, laps and sealing quantities for the membrane in your specification. The same area can require different purchases when roll width, overlaps and edge extensions change.
For the associated insulation quantities, use the insulation calculator. Keep membrane stock and tape purchases separate from insulation packs, and exclude a membrane allowance already included in another estimate.
For a detached building, coordinate the specified layers in the garden room planner. A weatherproof roof covering belongs in the flat roof EPDM calculator, while a wet-area system belongs in the bathroom tanking calculator. These products have different purposes and are not selected by whichever roll estimate uses least material.

DPM calculator for membrane rolls, overlaps and sealing tape
This free DPM and vapour barrier calculator estimates rolls for rectangular floors, walls and other measured zones. Enter the fully opened roll dimensions and the overlaps required by your specified system. Compare the two laying directions, inspect the cut lengths and add optional sealing tape, penetration collars and job costs.
The same rectangular roll geometry can help estimate different sheet products, but the calculator does not make those products interchangeable. A damp-proof membrane, air and vapour control layer, breather membrane and gas-resistant barrier can have different functions and installation requirements. Choose the appropriate product and construction details before using its dimensions here.
How to use the roll planner
- Select metric or imperial measurements.
- Add a rectangular zone using its width and length.
- Enter the roll’s fully opened width and usable length.
- Enter specified side and end overlaps, plus any equal allowance at all four edges.
- Compare both laying directions or select a direction required by the construction.
- Add optional complete stock, spare rolls, tapes and collars.
- Calculate, inspect the cutting schedule and print the estimate.
Use fully opened roll dimensions
Some membranes are folded before being rolled. The width of the packaged roll may therefore be much smaller than the sheet’s opened width. Enter the actual usable opened width stated by the supplier, together with the roll length. Using the packaged width can greatly overstate the number of strips and rolls.
For example, Visqueen Vapour Check is described by its manufacturer as a multi-folded air and vapour control membrane. Check the dimensions of the exact selected product rather than assuming all rolls in a range are the same size.
The calculator uses one roll size and one specified product throughout an estimate. Mixed widths, different membrane types or incompatible stock should be estimated separately. Enter a usable length that reflects what can actually be cut from a complete roll.
Side overlaps reduce effective strip coverage
The first strip contributes the full roll width. Each subsequent strip contributes roll width minus the side overlap. The tool adds enough strips to cover the extended rectangular width. Dividing area by nominal roll area would miss this repeated overlap and can also miss the effect of the final narrow strip.
All strips initially consume the full roll width. If the last strip is trimmed narrower, that width offcut is not reused elsewhere. This makes the assumption visible and avoids promising a layout that depends on placing narrow remnants in unplanned positions.
A zero overlap is accepted for a mathematical comparison or a specification that provides a different joint arrangement. It is not a suggested installation detail. Enter the overlap required by the chosen system, and make sure it is smaller than the corresponding roll dimension.
Long zones and end overlaps
If the required strip length exceeds one roll length, the planner divides the strip into full-length pieces and a final shorter piece. Every additional piece contributes its length minus the entered end overlap. This preserves the required overall covered length.
For a simple example, a 12 m strip made from a 10 m roll with a 0.2 m end lap uses a 10 m piece and a 2.2 m piece. The combined cut length is 12.2 m while the covered length remains 12 m. Whether that seam location is permitted must be checked separately against the construction and product instructions.
The planner sorts cut lengths from longest to shortest and places each into the first roll with enough remaining length. This first-fit method reuses length capacity within one zone copy. It is a practical allocation method rather than a guarantee of the smallest possible number of rolls.
Comparing laying directions
Automatic mode calculates strips along the entered zone length and along its width. It chooses the option needing fewer rolls. If roll count is equal, it prefers the option with the shorter estimated seam length. Both roll counts remain visible in the results.
The preferred quantity layout may not be the appropriate installation layout. Support positions, permitted joints, product direction, access, fixing arrangements and connections can determine which direction is usable. Select a manual direction when those requirements override the numerical comparison.
Open the cutting schedule for each zone to see the required strip count, pieces per strip, cut lengths allocated to each roll and remaining roll length. Copies repeat that allocation exactly. Check the schedule before cutting, especially where uninterrupted lengths are important.
Edge allowances, openings and separate zones
The optional edge allowance adds the same extra amount to every edge. A 6 m by 4 m zone with a 0.2 m extension at each edge becomes a 6.4 m by 4.4 m layout rectangle. The entered allowance may represent an assessed upturn, connection or trimming requirement; the calculator does not decide its purpose or required size.
Where edge requirements differ, use a measured enclosing rectangle that already includes the unequal extensions and leave the additional allowance at zero, or split the work into suitable zones. Avoid adding an allowance twice.
Excluded area reduces the reported net zone area and area-based labour only. It does not remove membrane from the rectangular cutting layout. This deliberately avoids assuming that pieces cut from openings can be reused. Niche, penetration and opening connections still need their own assessed details.
Each zone and each copy receives a separate roll allocation. Remaining roll lengths are not pooled between zones or copies. On a large project, a checked manual cutting plan may find further reuse. The result describes the stated conservative assumptions rather than claiming an absolute minimum.
Sealing tape and penetration details
Optional seam tape uses the selected layout’s side and end seams. Side seams run for the extended strip length. End seams are counted at full roll width, including the final strip, so this may overstate tape where that strip is trimmed narrower. Tape passes let you include more than one tape run per seam where the specified system requires it.
Use the separate perimeter and detail tape section for measured lengths not already included as layout seams. Enter all intended runs in that figure. Both tape sections have their own extra allowance, roll length, stock and price. They are quantity estimates rather than detailed tape cutting plans.
Compatible collars can be counted separately by required pieces and pieces per purchase pack. The calculator does not select a collar diameter or connection method. DuPont’s vapour-control installation guidance discusses sealing membrane connections and penetrations. Follow the instructions for the actual system rather than transferring a detail between unrelated products.
Stock, spare rolls and optional pricing
Additional spare rolls are whole rolls added to the layout allocation. Complete matching rolls already available are then deducted, with new purchases never falling below zero. Do not count damaged, incompatible or incomplete rolls as complete stock.
Area labour uses net measured area without overlaps, edge extensions or spare rolls. Hours and days are alternatives where preparation and complex details dominate the work. Other whole-job costs can include separately assessed delivery, protection and preparation. All prices start at zero and labour starts at None.
Turning an accessory checkbox off excludes that accessory and its cost while keeping its inputs for later use. Closing a pricing section retains active values. Markup is added to total cost, then the entered tax applies. Currency selection changes symbols only.
Frequently asked questions
Can I substitute a DPM for a vapour control layer?
The calculator does not assess that. Confirm the product’s intended function, properties and position in the construction with the specification and supplier.
Does this calculate condensation risk?
No. It estimates material quantities from geometry. It does not assess moisture movement, condensation, ventilation or thermal design.
Why is the roll count higher than area divided by roll area?
Overlaps, rectangular cuts, the final strip and separate zone allocations can all increase purchases. The cutting schedule shows the assumptions.
Are offcuts shared between rooms?
No. Length capacity is reused only within one zone copy. Width trimmings and remaining material from other zones are not pooled.
Does the planner approve seam positions?
No. Review the proposed direction and cut arrangement against support, fixing and sealing requirements before using it.
Do openings reduce the membrane purchase?
No. They reduce net area and area labour only; the cutting layout remains rectangular.
Can I print the roll schedule for free?
Yes. Calculate and open Print / Save PDF. The printout includes the cutting details without an account or email signup.
