A layer covers each included area once. Individual areas can override the layer count; zero excludes this product there. Use separate products for different thicknesses or coverage figures. Prices and existing stock must use the same purchased unit as the coverage. Existing stock has no historical cost assigned.

Keep insulation layers and membrane orders separate

Use the actual coverage of each insulation product and count repeated layers deliberately. Thickness and purchase volume describe the entered material; they do not on their own establish the thermal performance of the complete assembly.

Use the DPM and vapour barrier calculator for a separately specified membrane roll layout, with its own overlaps and sealing materials. If membrane is already included in this insulation estimate, compare the figures without adding both orders.

Insulation calculator for rolls, batts, packs and boards

This free insulation calculator estimates the whole rolls, packs or boards needed for measured loft, wall, floor and roof surfaces. Start with one area and your product’s labelled coverage, then add repeated areas, layers, a second product or optional job pricing. It supports Metric and Imperial measurements and gives a printable purchasing breakdown.

The calculator plans material quantities. It does not decide which insulation system is suitable, determine a compliant thickness or calculate thermal performance. Use the specification and product guidance for the actual building element before estimating an order.

How to use the calculator

  1. Select units and enter Product A’s coverage per purchased roll or pack. For boards, you can instead enter board dimensions and the number of boards in a purchased pack.
  2. Check the default layer count. One full layer is the starting assumption; it is not a recommended construction detail.
  3. Add the actual surfaces to insulate. Choose rectangle, triangle, four room walls or direct measured area. Deduct uninsulated areas per copy and repeat identical sections where useful.
  4. Use optional layer overrides to give individual areas different numbers of A and B layers. Blank inherits the product default; zero excludes a product.
  5. Enable Product B when a different product, thickness or pack coverage needs its own order calculation.
  6. Add deliberate waste allowances, matching existing stock and prices if needed. Thickness, membrane, labour and markup/tax are optional.
  7. Calculate, review the separate shopping quantities and open Print / Save PDF for a result-only estimate.

A simple insulation quantity example

A 5 m by 4 m surface has an area of 20 m². With one layer and 10% extra, Product A must cover 22 m². If one purchased pack covers 6 m² at the specified thickness, the unrounded requirement is 22 ÷ 6 = 3.667 packs. Round up to four packs. If one matching whole pack is already available, buy three new packs.

The 6 m² coverage in this example is an arithmetic input, not a universal roll or batt coverage. Use the actual label for your product. Different thicknesses in the same product range can have different pack areas.

Coverage per roll or pack

Enter the area supplied by one complete purchased unit. If a pack contains several batts or a roll is divided into strips, its labelled total coverage already includes those pieces. Multiplying the total by the piece count again would understate the number of packs you need.

A board-based estimate multiplies board length by width and by boards per purchased pack. A 2.4 m × 1.2 m board covers 2.88 m² before cuts. Four such boards per pack provide 11.52 m². The calculator includes 2.4 m × 1.2 m only as an editable dimensional example; check the exact supplier size, pack count and price basis.

Board quantities calculated from area are not a cutting plan. Joist or stud spacing, board orientation, joint requirements, defects and unusable offcuts may mean that the area-rounded quantity is insufficient. Add an informed waste allowance and review the actual fitting layout before ordering.

One layer, several layers or two different products

Each full layer covers the relevant net area once. Two layers over 20 m² create 40 m² of installed layer area. This does not make the building surface 40 m²: surface area and layer area are shown separately to keep purchasing, membrane and labour calculations clear.

If both layers use the same product and purchased pack size, use Product A with two layers. If a base layer and top layer have different thicknesses or coverage, configure A and B separately. Each product is pooled across its included areas and rounded up independently. Its existing stock and price also remain separate.

Product B starts with one layer across each area when enabled. Use a B-layer override of zero where that area does not need B. You can also set A to zero in an area covered only by B. At least one enabled product must have a layer on every entered area. Products with no assigned layers are omitted from the purchasing result.

Measuring lofts, roofs, walls and floors

Use actual insulation surface dimensions. A sloping roof surface is larger than its horizontal projection; measure along the slope or enter an independently measured slope area. This calculator does not infer roof pitch from floor dimensions.

The four-wall shortcut multiplies the rectangular room perimeter by wall height. It excludes the ceiling and floor. Deduct windows, doors or other openings only where the insulation specification genuinely leaves them uninsulated. Add the ceiling or floor as separate areas if they are also included in the project.

Triangle mode is useful for a simple gable or triangular zone. Use the base and perpendicular height. Split irregular shapes into measured sections, or use direct area. Repeated copies multiply both the area and its per-copy deduction.

Waste, stock and material volume

Waste is separate for each product and defaults to zero. It can account for cuts, handling losses and unusable pieces. Whole-pack rounding can create additional surplus beyond the waste you enter; the results show that surplus explicitly.

Existing stock means whole, usable matching rolls or packs of the same product, thickness and coverage. Partial rolls and mixed offcuts are not counted as complete packs. Stock reduces the new order but has no historical cost assigned. Include that value in other job costs only if it belongs in your business estimate.

Optional thickness gives theoretical fitted material volume: installed layer area multiplied by the thickness of one layer. Layer counts are already included in layer area. Volume excludes waste and packaging and is not compressed transport volume. Entering a thickness does not automatically change pack coverage or add layers.

Membrane and labour options

The optional membrane estimate covers each net surface once regardless of the insulation layers. Enter effective coverage per roll after the required laps, and add an extra percentage only for further allowance. Do not account for the same overlaps twice. The calculator does not determine whether a membrane is required, which type is suitable or where it should be placed.

Net-area labour prices each surface once. Layer-area labour prices every installed A and B layer. Hours or days can better represent varied access, removal and fitting work. Waste does not increase area labour automatically. Add delivery, fixings, tape or other costs once, then use optional markup and tax for a customer estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate loft insulation rolls with this?

Yes. Enter measured loft insulation area and the coverage of each purchased roll or pack at its specified thickness. Use a separate product section where another layer has different coverage.

Does changing thickness change how many packs I need?

The optional thickness field only calculates material volume. Pack quantities use the coverage you enter. When you change the actual product thickness, update its coverage and price from the label as necessary.

Can I use it for PIR boards or mineral wool batts?

Yes. Use labelled pack coverage or board dimensions and pack count. Verify the product is suitable for the specified application. Similar coverage does not imply equivalent thermal or fire performance.

Does a second layer double every cost?

No. It increases the assigned insulation layer area, but membrane still counts net surface area once. Labour depends on your selected method. Whole purchases, stock and product prices are calculated separately.

Can some areas use Product B only?

Yes. Enable B, set A layers to zero on those areas and assign at least one B layer. Blank overrides use the relevant product default.

Will this give me a board cutting layout?

No. Board dimensions establish pack coverage, but the estimate does not place individual cuts or optimise offcuts. Review fitting dimensions and allow for practical losses before buying.

Can I paste several areas at once?

Yes. Bulk entry uses the ten-column format shown beside the field. It shares the same calculation engine as area cards and preserves layer overrides when switching views.

Does the calculator give an R-value or U-value?

No. Those depend on material properties and the complete construction, including thermal bridges and other layers. This is a quantity and cost calculator, not a thermal design or compliance tool.

Should I compress insulation to fit a smaller space?

Use the product at the thickness and in the installation arrangement specified by its manufacturer. The optional volume field is based on uncompressed installed thickness and does not model compression.

Is printing the estimate free?

Yes. The result-only print view is free. Use the browser’s Print / Save PDF option. The separate Quote & Invoice Generator remains optional.
