Sealant calculator for silicone, caulk and joint sealing
Use this free sealant calculator to estimate cartridges or sausages for a single joint, a bathroom refresh or a larger sealing project. Enter the installed bead dimensions and total length, or use the manufacturer’s stated coverage for your exact product. Silicone, acrylic caulk and other sealants are not interchangeable simply because they come in similar cartridges. This tool estimates quantities from your inputs. Product choice, adhesion, movement capability, paintability and curing requirements remain specific to the material and application.
How to use the sealant calculator
- Select Metric or Imperial. Imperial cartridge volumes are US fluid ounces, not weight ounces.
- Check the labelled volume per cartridge or sausage. Enter one product, colour and pack size per estimate.
- Choose joint geometry or manufacturer coverage. For geometry, enter the actual intended bead width and sealant depth; for coverage, enter the stated length per matching pack.
- Add joint runs. Use direct measured lengths or a rectangular perimeter, with exclusions, copies and separate parallel beads where required.
- Optionally override cross-sections for individual runs. Blank override values use the project defaults independently.
- Add waste, existing stock and purchase-pack size. Accessories and all pricing are optional.

How many cartridges of sealant do I need?
For a rectangular filled joint, multiply length in metres by width in millimetres and sealant depth in millimetres. The result is millilitres. Divide by the cartridge volume to find the unrounded cartridge requirement. Apply your waste allowance before rounding up, then subtract matching whole cartridges already available.
For example, a 10 m run with a 10 mm wide by 5 mm deep rectangular sealant cross-section needs 10 × 10 × 5 = 500 ml. With 10% extra, the requirement is 550 ml. Two 300 ml cartridges provide 600 ml, leaving 50 ml beyond the chosen allowance. With all optional prices at zero, this is a quantity-only estimate.
If you must buy boxes, enter their cartridge count as the purchase-pack size. Suppose you need five whole cartridges and already own one: the shortage is four. A box containing six means buying six new cartridges, not four. The price field is always per cartridge; divide a box price by its contents before entering it.
Choosing the correct bead shape
Rectangular filled joint: use width × sealant depth. The sealant depth is the material layer being applied, not necessarily the full gap behind it. Backing material can control depth, but the calculator does not design that detail.
Right-triangular corner fillet: enter the two perpendicular contact legs. The cross-section is half their product. Do not enter the visible diagonal face as a contact-leg measurement. A tooled concave fillet differs from an ideal triangle, so use a measured representative profile or reliable product coverage when that matters.
Round bead: enter the full deposited diameter. The area is π × diameter squared ÷ 4. A bead pressed flat between surfaces is no longer a full circle, and nozzle diameter alone does not prove the final profile.
These shapes are material-estimating approximations. Do not interpret the input fields as recommended joint dimensions, minimum bond lengths or permission to use a product in a particular application.
Using manufacturer coverage instead
If a technical data sheet gives metres or feet per cartridge for your joint dimensions, you can use that figure directly. Coverage must correspond to the exact pack volume, bead shape and dimensions. Geometry fields and individual dimension overrides are ignored in this method. Runs with materially different coverage requirements should have separate estimates.
Manufacturer yields are often theoretical. Surface roughness, irregular gaps, tooling and material left in a nozzle can change practical usage. Set a deliberate extra allowance based on the work and the product guidance. Avoid adding the same wastage twice if a supplier’s practical coverage figure already includes it.
Multiple runs, perimeters and repeated beads
A perimeter shortcut is useful for a rectangular opening or another four-sided sealing route. It calculates twice the length plus twice the width, less the measured exclusions. A three-sided opening can use an appropriate exclusion, or its individual sides can be entered as direct runs. Do not use both approaches for the same joint.
Copies repeat the complete run, including its exclusions. Parallel beads multiply the resulting length again. For example, two identical 3 m runs with two separate beads per copy count as 12 m of installed bead. Length labour, tape and any included backer rod use this same installed bead length.
Bulk entry is available for longer lists. Its format is shown beside the field, and measurement cards and bulk rows use the same calculation logic. You can switch views without losing entered measurements. A blank shape or dimension override inherits the project setting; zero is not a valid joint dimension.
Optional backer rod and masking tape
Backer rod is estimated by length on the runs you include. Each separate bead uses one rod length, with an optional independent extra allowance and whole-roll rounding. Choose diameter and material type from the sealant system’s specification. Rod volume is not subtracted from the calculated sealant: the geometry should already describe the intended sealant layer above it.
Masking tape uses all installed bead lengths multiplied by one or two masked sides, then adds its own allowance and rounds up to full rolls. This is a purchasing estimate, not advice on tape compatibility or removal time. Primer, cleaners, tooling and other consumables can be included as whole-job costs if needed.
Costing a sealing job
Material costs use the new cartridges and full accessory rolls being purchased. Existing cartridges are assigned no previous cost. Labour can be charged per installed bead length, by hours or by days. Time pricing is often more useful where old material removal and preparation vary considerably.
Other costs should contain items not already counted. Markup is calculated on total cost, then tax is applied to cost plus markup. A 20% markup is not a 20% profit margin. Use consistent prices before tax and check which charges belong in your own estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this as a silicone or caulk calculator?
Yes. Enter the correct product volume and joint dimensions or stated coverage. The arithmetic applies to deposited material volume, but it does not make different sealants interchangeable.
Does a 300 ml cartridge always cover the same length?
No. Coverage depends on cross-section and practical losses. A wider or deeper bead needs more material per metre. The 300 ml starting value is only an editable pack-size example.
Why does a triangular bead need less than a rectangular one?
An ideal right triangle occupies half the rectangle defined by the same two perpendicular dimensions. A real tooled bead may differ, so measure the intended profile or use applicable manufacturer coverage.
Should I use the full gap depth?
Use the specified sealant layer depth. Where backing controls the sealant thickness, the full void behind it is not all filled with sealant. Confirm the correct joint detail with the manufacturer.
Can different rooms use different joint sizes?
Yes, in geometry mode. Add runs and use their optional cross-section overrides. All rows must still use the same product, colour and cartridge size.
Does changing the quantity method erase my dimensions?
No. Geometry settings are retained while manufacturer coverage mode is selected, but they are excluded from its calculation. Switch back to use them again.
Can I include opened cartridges as existing stock?
This calculator counts only whole usable matching units. Partly used or cured stock should not be entered as a full cartridge. Review it separately before relying on it.
Does backer rod reduce the calculated sealant volume?
Not automatically. Enter the actual sealant thickness above the backing. Deducting backing again would understate the material.
Are accessory and price fields required?
No. Backer rod and tape start off, all costs start at zero and labour starts at None. The main quantity estimate remains useful without them.
Can I save the result as a PDF for free?
Yes. Open Print / Save PDF and use your browser’s printing options. The print view contains your estimate without the website navigation, article or paid-product promotion.

Measure joints independently of surface area
Use the joint length, width and depth, or the selected manufacturer’s stated coverage method, for the sealant being ordered. Keep different bead shapes and cartridge sizes separate. A room’s wall or floor area does not determine its joint volume.
