Paving quantity: slabs and pavers are estimated using their installed module size, including the entered joint width. Real layouts may require additional cuts around edges, corners, obstacles or unusual patterns.

Construction depths: this calculator uses the depths entered by the user. It does not design the paving construction or determine the correct depth for a particular site.

Weights: aggregate, sand, cement and jointing weights are approximate and depend on material density, moisture and supplier specifications.

Pack coverage: where manufacturer pack coverage has been entered, that figure should normally be preferred for mixed-size packs and irregular paving products.

Costs: pricing results only include values entered in Widget 1. Fields left at zero do not contribute to the estimated cost.

How to Calculate Paving Slabs, Sub-Base, Sand, Cement & Materials

Planning a patio, garden path, paved area or block paving project involves more than simply measuring the surface area. You may also need to estimate the number of slabs or pavers, wastage, sub-base, bedding material, mortar, jointing products, edging and the overall project cost.

How to Use the Paving Calculator

Work through the project in a logical order.

Measure the paving area

Enter the length and width of your patio, path or paved area. Multiple areas can be added to the same project. Circle, triangle and direct-area calculations are also available for unusual layouts.

Enter the slab or paver size

Enter the actual length and width of the paving slab, block, brick paver or porcelain tile you intend to use, together with the planned joint width.

Add a wastage allowance

Wastage gives you additional paving for cuts, breakages, selection and awkward edges. The percentage can be changed to suit your particular layout and material.

Add construction materials

If required, include sub-base aggregate, bedding sand or mortar, jointing material, edging and other optional materials.

Add prices and labour

Tradespeople can optionally enter material costs, labour, subcontractor costs, markup and VAT or sales tax to produce an estimated customer price.

How Is Paving Area Calculated?

Start with the total surface that will actually be paved.

For a rectangular or square patio, the basic calculation is:

Area = Length × Width

A patio measuring 6 m × 4 m, for example, has a total area of:

6 m × 4 m = 24 m²

If the project contains several areas, calculate each section separately and then add them together. This is particularly useful for projects containing a main patio, connecting path and separate landing.

The calculator does this automatically when you use Add Another Area or the bulk area entry section.

How Many Paving Slabs Do I Need?

Slab dimensions, joint width and wastage all affect the answer.

A paving slab calculator needs both the total paving area and the dimensions of the paving product. The calculator also allows for the joint between adjacent slabs or pavers when estimating the installed module size.

Approximate units required = Total paving area ÷ Installed unit module area

The result is then rounded up because individual paving units cannot normally be purchased as fractions. Your selected wastage percentage is applied to produce the recommended order quantity.

Important: A mathematical paving quantity is an estimate rather than a laying plan. Cuts around borders, steps, drains, walls, curves and obstacles can increase the actual quantity required.

How Much Extra Paving Should I Allow for Wastage?

There is no single percentage that is correct for every project.

Paving wastage accounts for material lost or consumed through cutting, accidental damage, unusable pieces, pattern requirements and future replacements.

A simple rectangular patio with large regular paving units may require relatively few cuts, while diagonal layouts, complex borders, curves, mixed-size packs or irregular natural stone can require considerably more.

The calculator therefore makes the wastage percentage editable rather than assuming that one figure is suitable for every job.

Calculating Paving Packs

Paving products are not always sold as individual slabs.

Some products are sold as a fixed number of units per pack, while patio packs and mixed-size paving are often sold by stated area coverage.

The calculator therefore supports both:

Units per pack

Useful when every slab or block in the pack is the same size.

Coverage per pack

Particularly useful for mixed-size patio packs and products sold according to their installed square-metre or square-foot coverage.

When manufacturer coverage is available, it is usually the most useful figure for mixed-size or irregular packs.

How to Calculate Sub-Base for Paving

Estimate aggregate using area and compacted depth.

Sub-base aggregate is commonly used beneath paving to create a stable construction layer. In the UK, a frequently encountered description is MOT Type 1, although terminology and available materials vary internationally.

Sub-base volume = Paving area × Required compacted depth

For example, a 24 m² paved area with an entered compacted depth of 100 mm represents:

24 m² × 0.10 m = 2.40 m³

The calculator can then apply an additional compaction or wastage allowance and, when a material density is entered, estimate the corresponding weight and number of bags or bulk bags.

The calculator does not specify the correct sub-base depth. Required construction can differ significantly depending on the intended use, ground conditions, drainage, paving system and local practice. Enter the depth required for your particular project.

Sand and Bedding Calculator for Paving

Bedding volume is calculated from area and entered depth.

If your paving system uses a sand bed or another bedding material, the required volume can be estimated using:

Bedding volume = Paving area × Bedding depth

If you also know the approximate density of the bedding material, the calculator can convert that volume into an estimated material weight.

Entering a bag or bulk-bag weight then allows the calculator to estimate how many whole bags are required.

Sand and Cement Calculator for a Paving Mortar Bed

Estimate the dry sand and cement required for a full mortar bed.

When Full Mortar Bed is selected, the calculator first works out the required finished bedding volume.

A dry-material factor is then applied because the volume of loose dry ingredients is not treated as exactly equal to the final finished mortar volume.

Dry constituent volume = Finished mortar volume × Dry material factor

This volume is divided according to the sand-to-cement ratio entered by the user. For example, a 4:1 mix contains four proportional parts sand to one proportional part cement.

Editable material densities are then used to estimate approximate weights and the number of cement or sand bags required.

Why are the values editable? Mortar specifications, bag sizes, densities and installation requirements vary. Check the requirements for your paving system and the information supplied with the materials being used.

How Much Paving Jointing Material Do I Need?

Product coverage varies considerably between jointing systems.

Jointing compounds, polymeric sands and other paving joint materials can have very different coverage rates depending on paver size, joint width, joint depth and installation method.

For this reason, the simplest calculation method in the tool uses the manufacturer's stated coverage per bag or tub.

Containers required = Total paving area ÷ Manufacturer coverage

An advanced joint-volume calculation is also available where joint depth, material density and container weight are known.

Calculating Paving Edging and Kerbs

Estimate units from the required linear length.

If a patio, path or block-paving installation requires edging or kerbs, enter the total length that needs to be covered and the length of each edging unit.

Edging units = Adjusted edging length ÷ Length per unit

The calculator rounds the result up to the next whole unit and allows an additional wastage percentage to be included.

A few checks can prevent surprisingly large ordering errors.

Forgetting separate areas

Paths, landings, steps and small extensions can add a significant amount to the total project area.

Ignoring wastage

Ordering only the mathematical minimum leaves no allowance for cuts, damaged units or unusable pieces.

Using nominal rather than actual product sizes

Check the dimensions and pack coverage of the paving product being purchased.

Forgetting joint width

Thousands of small block-paving joints can materially affect the installed unit count over a large area.

Guessing construction depth

Use the depth appropriate to the project rather than assuming that every patio, path and driveway requires the same build-up.

Treating supplier coverage as exact in every situation

Product coverage is useful, but site conditions, waste, installation technique and layout still matter.

How do I calculate how many paving slabs I need?

Measure the total area to be paved and enter the dimensions of the paving slab. The calculator estimates the number of installed slab modules that fit within the area and then adds your chosen wastage allowance before rounding up to whole units.

Does the paving calculator include wastage?

Yes. The wastage percentage is editable. This allows you to choose an allowance appropriate to the paving material, layout, amount of cutting and complexity of the project.

Can I calculate more than one patio or paving area?

What depth of sub-base should I enter?

Does the calculator estimate sand and cement for paving?

Yes. Select Full Mortar Bed, enter the bedding depth and the sand-to-cement mix ratio. The calculator estimates the finished mortar volume, dry constituent volume, approximate sand and cement quantities and whole cement bags where a bag size is provided.

Can I calculate paving sold by the pack?

Yes. You can enter either the number of paving units supplied per pack or the manufacturer's area coverage per pack. The calculator then rounds the result up to the required number of whole packs.

Does the calculator estimate paving costs?

Yes, but pricing is optional. Material prices, labour, subcontractor costs, other job costs, markup and VAT or sales tax can be entered to produce an estimated customer price. Leave the pricing fields at zero if you only need material quantities.
