This brick and block calculator helps you estimate the amount of masonry needed for walls, extensions, garden walls, garages, outbuildings, property repairs and general building work.

You can calculate multiple wall sections, deduct doors and windows, add a waste allowance, estimate mortar requirements and work out how many packs or pallets need to be purchased. For contractors and tradespeople, the calculator can also include labour, additional project costs, markup and VAT or sales tax.

The calculator works with both metric and imperial measurements and allows you to enter the actual brick or block dimensions being used, rather than relying on one fixed masonry size.

How the Brick Calculator Works

A reliable brick wall calculator needs to account for more than just wall area. Brickwork normally includes mortar joints, openings, waste and whole pack or pallet purchasing.

The calculator first adds together the gross area of all wall sections. It then subtracts the area of doors, windows and other openings to find the net masonry area.

Brick or block quantity is calculated using the face size of the masonry unit together with the mortar joint thickness. This creates a nominal masonry module rather than simply dividing the wall by the bare face area of the brick or block.

Example:
A standard 215 mm × 65 mm brick with a 10 mm mortar joint creates a nominal face module of approximately 225 mm × 75 mm. This works out at roughly 59.3 bricks per square metre before allowing for waste.

How Many Bricks Do I Need?

The number of bricks required depends on the wall area, brick size, mortar joint thickness, openings and waste allowance.

For a commonly used UK brick around 215 mm × 65 mm with a 10 mm joint, the theoretical requirement is close to 60 bricks per square metre. Different brick sizes and joint widths will change that figure.

If you are working in feet rather than metres, the calculator automatically converts the wall area and displays an equivalent bricks-per-square-foot figure.

Do not assume every brick is the same size. Always check the actual product dimensions supplied by the manufacturer or merchant before ordering.

Concrete Block Calculator

The tool can also be used as a concrete block calculator. Select Concrete Block or choose the custom option and enter the dimensions of the block being used.

Larger blocks cover more wall area per unit, so considerably fewer blocks are usually needed than bricks. The calculator adjusts automatically using the entered block length, height and joint thickness.

Example:
A 440 mm × 215 mm block with a 10 mm mortar joint requires roughly 9.9 blocks per square metre before waste.

Deducting Doors, Windows and Other Openings

Large openings can make a significant difference to the number of bricks or blocks required. Instead of estimating the whole wall and manually reducing the quantity, you can enter each opening separately.

The calculator subtracts the total opening area from the gross wall area before calculating the masonry requirement.

How Much Brick or Block Waste Should I Allow?

Waste depends on the type of work being carried out. Cutting, breakages, colour selection, corners, bond pattern and damage during handling can all increase the number of units required.

For that reason, this calculator does not force a waste percentage. The default is 0%, allowing you to enter whatever allowance is appropriate for your project.

Once waste is added, the calculator rounds the final brick or block quantity up to a whole unit.

Brick Packs and Pallet Calculator

Masonry is often purchased in complete packs or pallets rather than as an exact individual quantity. This calculator can therefore convert the required number of bricks or blocks into whole purchase quantities.

Example:
If a wall requires 1,531 bricks including waste and the supplier sells bricks in packs of 500:

1,531 ÷ 500 = 3.062 packs
The calculator rounds this up to 4 complete packs.
Total bricks purchased = 2,000
Estimated surplus = 469 bricks.

This is especially useful when comparing the theoretical quantity required with the number of units you actually need to buy.

Mortar Calculator and Mortar Estimator

The mortar estimator calculates an approximate mortar volume based on the brick or block dimensions, wall depth, net masonry area and mortar joint thickness.

It then allows you to enter the manufacturer's stated mixed mortar yield per bag. The calculator converts the estimated mortar volume into the number of whole bags required.

A separate mortar waste percentage can also be added.

Mortar usage can vary significantly in real work. Joint profile, brick perforations or frogs, irregular masonry, workmanship, spillage and site conditions can all affect consumption. Treat the mortar figure as an estimate and compare it with the manufacturer's coverage or yield information.
