Free Flooring Calculator for Rooms, Packs, Wastage & Job Costs

Use this free flooring calculator to estimate how much laminate, engineered wood, hardwood, vinyl, LVT or tile flooring you need for one room or several areas.

The calculator can work in metric or imperial measurements and can estimate total floor area, flooring including wastage, full packs or boxes to buy, underlay, skirting or baseboard, labour, material costs, markup, VAT or sales tax and an estimated customer price.

It is useful whether you are a homeowner planning a DIY flooring project or a flooring installer, tradesperson or contractor pricing work for a customer.

How to Calculate How Much Flooring You Need

The basic calculation is simple: measure the length and width of the floor and multiply them together.

Floor Area = Room Length × Room Width

For example, a room measuring 5 metres long by 4 metres wide has a floor area of 20 square metres.

    Example:
    5 m × 4 m = 20 m²

If you have several rooms, hallways or separate areas, calculate each section individually and add the areas together. This calculator does that automatically when you use the “Add Another Room / Area” option.

How to Measure L-Shaped or Irregular Rooms

Irregular rooms are easier to calculate if you divide the floor into smaller rectangles.

For example, an L-shaped room can usually be split into two rectangular sections. Measure each section separately, enter both areas into the calculator, and the total floor area will be combined automatically.

    Area 1

    5 m × 4 m = 20 m²

    Area 2

    2 m × 1.5 m = 3 m²

    Total floor area: 23 m²

How Much Extra Flooring Should You Allow for Wastage?

Buying exactly the measured floor area is rarely enough. Flooring installation usually creates offcuts around walls, corners, doorways and obstacles, and some pieces may be damaged or unusable.

A common starting point for a straightforward installation is around 5% to 10% extra material. Diagonal or more complex layouts can require a larger allowance, often around 10% to 15% or more depending on the room and pattern.

    • Simple straight layout: often around 5–10%
    • Diagonal layout: often around 10–15%
    • Complex patterns: may require a higher allowance
    • Small or awkward rooms: can create proportionally more offcuts

These figures are general guidance only. Always check the flooring manufacturer's recommendations and consider the actual room shape and installation pattern before ordering.

How Many Packs of Flooring Do I Need?

Once you know the total flooring requirement including wastage, divide that figure by the coverage shown on each flooring pack or box.

Packs Required = Flooring Required ÷ Coverage Per Pack

Flooring is normally purchased in complete packs, so the result must always be rounded up to the next full pack.

    Example:
    Flooring required = 35 m²
    Pack coverage = 2.2 m²

    35 ÷ 2.2 = 15.91 packs

You need to buy 16 packs.

The calculator also shows the actual area purchased and the estimated surplus after the required flooring quantity has been covered.

Flooring Types This Calculator Can Be Used For

    Laminate Flooring

Calculate laminate floor area, packs, wastage, underlay and installation costs.

    Engineered Wood

Estimate engineered timber flooring quantities, packs and project costs.

    Solid Hardwood

Work out the quantity of hardwood flooring needed while allowing for cuts and wastage.

    Vinyl & LVT

Estimate floor area for vinyl planks, luxury vinyl tile and similar products.

    Tiles

Calculate tile floor area, box quantities and estimated pieces where tile dimensions are entered.

    Other Flooring

The generic flooring option can also be used for many other products sold by area or pack coverage.

How Much Flooring Underlay Do I Need?

Underlay normally covers the same basic floor area as the flooring, although you may wish to add a small separate allowance for cutting and fitting.

Underlay Required = Floor Area + Underlay Wastage

If underlay is sold in rolls or packs, divide the required underlay area by the coverage per roll and round up to the next complete pack.

The calculator keeps flooring wastage and underlay wastage separate because they do not always require the same allowance.

How to Calculate Skirting Board or Baseboard Length

For a simple rectangular room, calculate the perimeter by adding the length and width together and multiplying by two.

    Room Perimeter = (Length + Width) × 2

You can then deduct doorways or other openings where skirting or baseboard will not be installed.

If the trim is sold in fixed lengths, divide the required perimeter by the length of one piece and round up to the next whole piece.

How to Estimate the Cost of a Flooring Job

A flooring job estimate can include much more than the flooring itself. Depending on the project, your total cost may include flooring, underlay, skirting or baseboard, adhesives, trims, delivery, floor preparation, labour, waste disposal and other job expenses.

The calculator allows flooring to be priced either by pack or by square metre / square foot. Labour can be entered as a rate per area, a fixed installation price, an hourly rate or a day rate.

Base Project Cost = Flooring + Underlay + Trim + Materials + Labour + Other Costs

    Markup, VAT and Sales Tax

Contractors can also use this flooring estimator to add a markup to calculated project costs before applying VAT or sales tax.

Markup and profit margin are not the same calculation. This calculator uses true markup.

    Example:
    Project cost = £1,000
    Markup = 20%

    £1,000 × 20% = £200 markup
Customer price before tax = £1,200

VAT or sales tax is then calculated using the percentage entered by the user. No country-specific tax rate is assumed.

    Common Flooring Calculation Mistakes

    • Ordering the exact room area: this leaves no allowance for offcuts or damaged pieces.
    • Forgetting to round packs up: flooring cannot normally be purchased as a fraction of a pack.
    • Ignoring awkward areas: alcoves, hallways and L-shaped sections still need to be measured.
    • Using flooring wastage for every material: underlay and trim may require different allowances.
    • Forgetting preparation costs: levelling, damp protection, adhesive, trims and waste disposal can significantly affect the final job price.
    • Confusing markup with profit margin: they are different calculations and can produce different prices.
