If you want to make your own concrete edging, you need to invest in a concrete mold. You can buy custom-built ones or uncoated wood molds. These molds will help you create the shape of an edging border. They will also prevent the concrete from moving during the installation process.
QUIKRETE fiber concrete

Whether you are putting in a simple border or a complete driveway remodel, this tool is the best way to ensure that the finished product is perfect.
The mold is available in 24 inches long, two inches wide, and two inches tall. It is an ideal tool to enhance any outdoor space and will add a decorative touch to any home or business. These molds are available from QUIKRETE in various colors.
Uncoated wood
Uncoated wood is a standard material for DIY concrete edging molds. Its slick surface will make concrete release from the mold much easier. Specifically, 3/4-inch MDF board with melamine face is ideal. This material will not crack or chip when exposed to concrete, and it is also a relatively inexpensive material.
To make concrete edging molds at home, start by digging a deep trench. The trench should be two to three inches wider and deeper than the concrete. The sides of the trench should be level with each other. Use a flat-head shovel to break up any dirt clods. Once the trench is shaped, make a plywood form using 1/4-inch-thick plywood sheets or bendable strips. Bendable strips are also available for curved shapes. Cut the pieces to the correct depth.
Melamine molds
Melamine molds for concrete edging are made from 3/4″ melamine-coated particleboard or plywood. The molds do not require release agents or oil. They can also be made from 2×2 lumber in any size, depending on your needs. In order to make them last a long time, they should be kept dry.
After the concrete dries, you can remove the mold from the concrete. To do this, drill two-inch pilot holes along the bottom of the side piece. After that, drill two-inch wood screws into the edge of the large melamine piece. Repeat the process for the short sides. You can also use a carpenter’s square to check the corners of the melamine.
Custom-built molds
You can create a concrete edging mold yourself using materials such as 3/4-inch plywood or melamine-coated particleboard. These materials don’t require a release agent or oil and are durable enough for concrete. You can also use 2×2 lumber and any size you like.
The first step is to dig a trench and clear out the soil and plants. Make sure to compact the base of the trench with a tamper to prevent settling. Next, stake the first form using heavy wooden stakes. After that, cut spacers to the width of the edging and place them parallel to it. You can then trowel the concrete to a smooth finish.
