There are several different types and colors of spray paints available on the market today, including Oil-based paint, metallic paint, specialty paints, and high-temperature paints. The type of spray paint that you choose depends on the purpose of the piece that you’re painting. For instance, if you’re painting a metal desk in an office, you’ll want to select a color that will stand up well to direct sunlight. On the other hand, if you’re painting a bike in a garage, you’ll want to choose a color that will be more resistant to UV rays.
Primer
If you’re spray painting metal, you must use a primer to help the paint adhere to the metal surface. You can use an iron oxide or zinc chromate primer on most metal surfaces.
Oil-based paint
There are many different kinds of paints for metal surfaces, including water-based acrylic and oil-based brush-on versions. Oil-based paints are more durable and will last longer, though they may require a longer drying time. Water-based paints are more forgiving, but may be difficult to find in spray form, especially for outdoor use. Both types of paint require preparation before you can begin painting.
Brush
You can use a paintbrush to apply spray paint to a metal piece. However, you have to make sure that you get the right paint for your surface. Some paints require multiple layers to give you the best finish. The paint should be mixed properly before applying it to the metal piece. If the paint is too thick, you should thin it with mineral spirits before applying another layer. A paintbrush with a high quality bristle tip is recommended.
Roller
There are several advantages of using a roller over a spray paint canister when spray painting metal. The roller will apply a thicker coat to metal and is much more durable. It also has a smoother finish, requiring less sanding between coats.
Self-etching primer
Whether you’re painting metal, wood, fiberglass, or plastic, there’s a self-etching primer to help you. These primers fill in minor imperfections on the surface, and help the top coat adhere properly.
Masking paper
The first step in spray painting metal is to apply masking paper to the area that will not be painted. Fortunately, there are many options for this application. Masking tape is specifically designed for this purpose, and comes in a variety of widths. Narrow tape is suitable for applications around corners, while wide tape can cover large areas of an automobile. You can also use a masking paper dispenser to make the process faster. Dispensers come in a variety of forms, from hand-held implements to sophisticated multi-roll dispensers.
Tape
Painters tape comes in different colors. Some are green, while others are blue. The blue variety is more durable and doesn’t leave adhesive residue. Blue tape is more effective for interior baseboard painting because it protects cabinets, wainscoting, and crown molding. It also helps create smooth lines.
Scuffing pad
There are three different types of scuffing pads for metal surfaces. A fine grade one is suitable for bare metal and plastic, while a medium-grade one will make a medium-to-heavy-duty scratch. A green scuff pad is heavy-duty, but is rarely used.
