How to use this builder
- Identify the actual work, location, people and supervisor.
- Check the applicable risk assessment, drawings, permits, equipment and access arrangements.
- Write each work step in the order it will happen. Add a control and a hold point wherever the team must check before proceeding.
- Record what happens if the plan changes and the site-specific emergency arrangements.
- Have a competent person review and brief the final method. Use Print / Save as PDF to keep the reviewed version.
HSE explains how method statements can communicate a safe system of work, especially for complex or higher-risk construction activities. See HSE construction administration guidance and HSE work-at-height assessment guidance. This tool is independent of HSE.
Common questions
Does a method statement replace a risk assessment?
No. It should reflect the hazards and controls identified for the actual task and site. It also needs a clear sequence, people, equipment and arrangements for change.
Are method statements always legally required?
Requirements depend on the work. HSE says method statements are not generally required by law for all construction activities, but written arrangements for demolition, dismantling or structural alteration are required before work begins. Seek competent advice for specialist work.
Can I save an unfinished draft?
Yes. Download the editable JSON file and import it later. Keep it private if it contains customer or site details. The draft is not automatically stored.
Can I print a blank draft?
Yes. It will remain marked as a draft requiring competent review. Your browser's print dialog can save a PDF.
